Southeast Missouri State University

The David M. Barton Agriculture Research Center is a 252 acre (100 ha) facility featuring emerging technologies in cow-calf management and irrigated row-crop production. This newly acquired facility is designed with underground water conduits to provide cattle watering for advanced paddock grazing, with research focusing on animal performance based on environmentally sound pasture management. In addition, the new University Research Farm will feature intensive pasture-grazing research involving irrigation and intensive soil fertility management. The row-crop component is based on a 100 acre (40 ha) land-graded field having the latest technology involving controlled sub-surface drainage and irrigation. Row crop research primarily involves soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) and corn (Zea mays L.) production, illustrating emerging technologies and production methods.

The David M. Barton Agriculture Research Center Objectives:

  1. Utilize a farmer-based advisory committee to assist in designing research projects to advance small-scale farming in southeast Missouri.
  2. Provide annual “field days” to illustrate producer oriented emerging technologies and research. Current plans for fall include an alfalfa trial for local dairy producers, corn and soybean populations, and animal-pasture interactions.
  3. Provide an agriculture education center for Southeast MO State University and local FFA districts.
  4. Conduct demonstrations and research to promote soil and water conservation. Research with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources will focus on watershed water quality using the controlled drainage-irrigation system.
  5. Provide unbiased research for Agribusiness and other agriculturally related entities.
