Art Academy for ages 6-Adult

Summer 2012

Presented by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art.

The Art Academy Workshops are engaging and fun learning experiences in a wide variety of media designed to enrich and realize one’s personal and contemporary vision for ages kindergarten through adult. All the workshops, except Mural at the Mall, are held in the Southeast Missouri State University Art Studios under the guidance of experienced and highly qualified master art instructors. Each instructor will also have a Southeast Art Education student assistant. All classes are limited to 15 students. Student work will be on exhibit at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri through the month of August. Opening Reception will be held August 3, 2012 from 5-9 p.m.

Workshops for Ages 6-9

Registration Form

Children's Ceramics

- June 4-15, M/W/F - 10-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will enjoy this beginning class in ceramics where they will make animals, masks, and simple pottery with terra cotta and low fire glazes. Instructor: Cermaics Professor Benjie Heu, Ceramics studio, 835 Broadway, corner of Pacific and Broadway (behind Howard's). Fee: $90.

Painting

- June 18-22, 9-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will create with a wide variety of painting techniques (with and without brushes) and two and three dimensional material. Instructor: Sharon Williams , Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Drawing

- June 25-29, 9-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will enjoy drawing with a wide variety of material: pastel, ink, charcoal, and more!. Instructor: Brenday Seyer, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Recycled Art!

- July 9-13, 9-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will create their own masterpieces with found objects! Instructor: Susan Lane, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Print making

- July 16-20, 9-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will enjoy creating simply striking stamp, stencil, relief, and monoprints of animals, people, and places! – Instructor: Susan Lane, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Sculpture

- July 23-27, 9-noon (6-9 yrs.) Children will explore and create relief and in the round sculptures using wood, paper, clay, and much more! Instructor: Brenda Seyer, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Young Potters

- June 4-15, M/W/F - 1-3 p.m. (10-15 yrs.) Students will learn to operate a potter’s wheel to make functional pottery including bowls and cups, as well as explore hand building with clay. Instructor: Benjie Heu, Ceramics studio, 835 Broadway, corner of Pacific and Broadway Fee: $90.

Mixed Media Painting

- June 18-22, 1-4 p.m. (10-15 yrs.) Students will take painting to a whole new exciting level by adding a wide variety of media. Instructor: Becky Coleman, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Drawing

- June 25-29, 1-4 p.m. (10-15 yrs.) Students will develop and explore drawing techniques in perspective, value, and proportion using pastel, ink, charcoal and more!. Instructor: Beth Thomas, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Creating Creatures!

- July 9-13, 1-4 p.m. (10-15 yrs.) Learn the tips and techniques to create unbelievable creatures from Master Creature creator Michael Baird. Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Mural at the Mall

- July 16-20, 1-4 p.m. (ages 10 and up) Students will work with professional master mural artist Craig Thomas in designing and painting a mural at West Park Mall using acrylic paint. Students are encouraged to wear paint clothes and bring snacks and drink. West Park Mall. Fee: $90.

Sculpture

- July 23-27, 1-4 p.m. (10-15 yrs.) Students will create relief and in the round sculptures in all shapes and sizes using plaster, clay, wood, and more. Instructor: Debbie Bollinger, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

Photoshop "Phun!"

- May 22 & 23, 10-noon (ages 16 and up) Bring an 8” x 10” image (such as a sharp image photo, a painting on paper, and/or ink drawing-no pastels or charcoal) and become introduced to creative possibilities of image manipulation using Photoshop with Master Graphic Design Professor Louise Bodenheimer. Also bring a flash drive and notebook. River Campus Seminary Room 002. Fee: $60.

Raku Pottery

- June 5 & 12, 6:30-9 p.m. (ages 16 and up) Students will create Raku friendly forms of pottery, wheel and hand build with clay with Master Ceramic Professor Benjie Heu. Ceramics studio, 835 Broadway, corner of Pacific and Broadway. Fee: $60.

Large Scale Drawing

- June 19 & 20, 6:30-9 p.m. (ages 16 and up) Expand your drawings into life-sized images and spaces. No drawing experience required. Students will cover basic drawing skills such as gesture drawing, positive/negative shape and space, composition, value tones, line sensitivity and perceptual accuracy with Master Drawing Professor Kathy Smith, River Campus Room 042. Fee: $60.

Get Twisted! Twisted Wire Jewelry Workshop

- June 26 & 27, 6:30-9 p.m. (ages 16 and up) Create spectacular twisted wire jewelry! No experience required. Students will work with beads, brass and a bit of silver wire with Master Jewelry Professor Caroline Kahler, Serena Building, Room 313. Fee: $60.

Creating Creatures

- July 10 & 11, 6:30-9 p.m. (ages 16 and up) Learn the tips and techniques to create unbelievable creatures from Master Creature creator Michael Baird. Serena Building, Room 312. Fee: $60.
