Art Academy Summer 2009 for ages 6-18
Presented by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art.
Full Day Art Workshop for ages 15-18
This art workshop is designed for the high school student artist interested in broadening and enriching their art experiences. This weeklong workshop features experiences in ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting and printmaking. Class size is limited to 15 students. Bring a brown bag lunch and dress for a mess! Your work will be exhibited at the River Campus Art Gallery from June 14 through July with an opening reception on June 14, from 2-4 p.m. Fee: $200 (all supplies included plus an Art Academy t-shirt.)
- Raku Ceramics - June 8, 8 a.m. - noon and June 12, 8 a.m. - noon in Memorial Hall, Room 002. Students will create Raku friendly forms on the pottery wheel and hand build with clay. You will get dirty!
- Sculpture - June 8, 1-5 p.m. and June 12, 1-5 p.m. in the Serena Building, Room 104. Students will collaborate with each other in a large outdoor sculpture consisting of metal, wood and found material.
- Printmaking - June 9, 8 a.m. - noon and June 10, 1-5 p.m. at the River Campus, Room 41. Students will work in the medium of collagraph, creating monoprints from the plate that they create. Various methods of creating the plate as well as printing from the plate will be explored.
- Painting - June 9, 1-5 p.m. and June 11, 1-5 p.m. at River Campus, Room 47. Student artists will create a portable painting, examine the question, “What is art?,” challenge previous notions of beauty and investigate the way public creative expressions effect our daily lives.
- Drawing - June 10, 8 a.m. - noon and June 11, 8 a.m. - noon at River Campus, Room 42. Basic drawing skills will be covered such as: gesture drawing, positive/negative shape and space, composition, value tones, line sensitivity and perceptual accuracy.
All full day workshops will be held in the Southeast art studios under the guidance of the University’s Department of Art faculty: Benji Heu, ceramics; Chris Wubbena, sculpture; Kristin Nowlin, printmaking; Emily Booth, painting; Kathy Smith, drawing.
Half Day Art Workshops for ages 6-18
These half-day Art Academy Workshops are for student artists to develop cultural appreciation and aesthetic awareness as they develop their own creative thinking skills for self-expression. All workshops, except Mural at the Mall, are held in the Southeast University Art Studios under the guidance of local experienced art educators. All classes are limited to 15 students. Dress for a mess! Student work will be on exhibit at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri through the month of August. Opening Reception will be held August 7, from 5-9 p.m. Fee: $80 (all supplies included plus an Art Academy t-shirt)
- Children's Ceramics - June 15-19, 8:30-11:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall, Room 028. Ages 6-9 . Children will enjoy this beginning class in ceramics where they will make animals, masks, and simple pottery with terra cotta
- Young Potters - June 15-19, 1-4 p.m. in Memorial Hall, Room 028. Ages 10-14. Children will learn to operate a potter’s wheel to make functional pottery including bowls and cups, as well as explore hand building with clay. Instructor Benji Heu.
- Drawing Workshop - June 29-July 3, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. in Serena Building, Room 312. Ages 6-9 and 10-14. Students will be inspired by past and contemporary drawings and develop their drawing skills through observation and imagination while exploring a variety of media. Instructors Carol Horst and Brenda Seyer.
- Painting workshop - July 6-10, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p. m. in Serena Building, Room 312. Ages 6-9 and 10-14 The Painting class will explore painting techniques while studying art history and artwork from around the world. Students will work in a variety of two and three-dimensional media. Instructors Becky Coleman and Sharon Williams.
- Sculpture Workshop - July 13-17, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. in Serena Building, Room 312. Ages 6-9 and 10-14. Students will develop an understanding of high relief, low relief, and sculpture in the round by many famous artists. Instructors Beth Thomas and Debbi Bollinger
- Mural at the Mall - July 14-18, 1-4 p.m. at West Park Mall. Ages 10-18. Students will design and paint a mural in the Mall, using acrylic paint. Students are encouraged to wear paint clothes and bring snacks and drink. Instructor Craig Thomas.
