Student Exhibitions

Art majors have a number of opportunities each year to exhibit their artwork. Art projects are displayed regularly in the department and in the University center display cases. The library also accepts art student exhibitions.  Most important, are the Annual Art Students Juried Assessment Exhibition and the Annual Art Seniors Exhibition.

For the Annual Art Students Juried Assessment Exhibition, all majors must enter two works they produced in class. All pieces entered are judged by a juror/artist from another university. Monetary awards are given in each category, and purchase awards are given from many administrative offices.

Students wishing to accomplish a BFA degree in art must exhibit a body of work created during their senior year.  These exhibitions are held in the campus museum or in community exhibition spaces.  Senior BFA artwork is produced under the direction of three faculty members who help prepare the student for a career in art.

The Salon Des Refuse Exhibition occurs once a year in conjunction with the Annual Art Students Juried Assessment Exhibition. The exhibition consists of artwork that is not selected by the juror to be in the hurried show.  Students take pride in their work and want it seen by the campus community so they host a “refused” art exhibit.  This long standing tradition dates back to the late 1800’s.

The Artist’s Guild Show and Sale is organized after Thanksgiving and prior to winter break.  Student’s artwork of ceramics, wearable fiber art, prints and photographs are for sale at the University Center.

Many of the senior level art majors exhibit their artwork in galleries and restaurant spaces around the Cape Girardeau community.  Students ban together, rent spaces and produce post cards to advertise the show.

Travel

The Department of Art sponsors annual trips to art centers located in major cities, including Chicago and New York. These trips allow students and faculty members to experience original art, sculpture and architecture in large museums and professional galleries.  These student trips run approximately $400 to $600, depending upon the location and typically do not include college credit.

Students participating in art history may take elective trips to St. Louis, Memphis and Paducah.  Museums and art centers provide opportunities to view original and important works of art only a short bus ride away.

An opportunity to study abroad is also available through special art classes offered at Southeast.  Faculty members teach art history and watercolor classes in Paris, London, Venice and Rome.  Students and faculty members stay in apartments and hold classes in museums and architectural monuments.  Trips last anywhere from two to three  weeks and cost under $4,000.  Flights, transfers, tours and accommodations are arranged by our faculty members teaching the courses.
