The Department of Art is located in Serena Hall, Memorial Hall and the new River Campus.
Serena Hall, which is often recognized for its large clock tower, was originally built as the University’s manual training facility. Constructed between 1905 and 1909, the building was named after Southeast’s eighth president, Joseph A. Serena. The east and west additions to the building were added in 1962 and 1983. Serena Hall is used for sculpture, painting and art history.
Originally designed as the University’s student union, Memorial Hall was completed in 1950 and features classic prairie style architecture. It was named by the Board of Regents to memorialize the men and women of Southeast Missouri State’s district who served the country in all military capacities. The ceramics studio is located in the basement of Memorial.
The new River Campus houses the art office, fibers studio, painting studio, graphic design/computer art studio, printmaking studio, foundations studio, art history lecture hall and the River Campus Art Gallery. The River Campus is home of the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Southeast Missouri Regional Museum.
Southeast’s Department of Art offers an impressive array of art facilities and studios. Art studios are open until midnight daily to provide creative flexibility. Late passes are available for students working after hours.
Included in the facilities are:
Sculpture Studios – three different studio areas equipped with a 3D design facility, a metal fabrication facility, a wood shop, plaster/mixed-media area, and new genre. The sculpture area features numerous hand and power tools.
Ceramics Studio – a large studio equipped for hand-building, wheel throwing, and gas and electric kiln firing. The Ceramics Studio is equipped with two clay mixers, a pug mill, 15 electric pottery wheels, two slab rollers, six electric kilns, a large gas kiln, a raku kiln, a fully stocked glaze room, a ball mill and a large spray booth. Semi-private studios are available for clay majors. Clay students participate in annual pottery sales, attend national and regional ceramics workshops/exhibitions.
Graphic Design/Illustration/Computer Art Studio – features state-of-the-art Macintosh computers and software for 2-D and 3-D applications, digital scanners, digital projectors and large color printers.
Fibers Studio – equipped for loom weaving, computer looms, off-loom pieces, dyeing and spinning.
Painting Studio – equipped for painting, featuring high ceilings, windows, storage space for student work, a state-of-the-art studio lighting system and in-studio Macs.
Printmaking Studio – equipped for relief, intaglio, lithography, screen printing and digital prints.
Foundations Studio – equipped for design and color studies.
Drawing Studio – equipped for basic, intermediate and advanced drawing, with a state-of-the-art lighting system, generous display/critique boards, high ceilings and storage space for student work and supplies.
River Campus Art Gallery - host to monthly exhibitions of fine art, in addition to Senior BFA Exhibitions and the Faculty Exhibition.
Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Southeast Missouri Regional Museum – houses a permanent collection of art and artifacts featuring the Beckwith Collection of Native American pottery, the Blum Collection of Southwestern arts and crafts and the Missouri Mills water color collection. The gallery presents special exhibitions on a monthly basis, including the Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition, and other exhibitions of regional, national and international importance.
