Carol B. Horst has been an art educator since 1976.  She attended Washington University, Southwest Missouri State University, and received her B.S. and Masters in Art degrees from Southeast Missouri State University. Her teaching career began in the Rockwood School District in St. Louis County teaching secondary Art I classes in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and video. Four years later, she married Steve Horst, owner of Horst pharmacy, moved to Jackson, where she created logos for local businesses, illustrated a kinesiology textbook entitled Introductory Biomechanics, and drew hundreds of commissioned portraits.  Carol has two daughters: Jennifer, who is currently a surgery resident at Barnes Jewish Hospital; and, Laura, an engineer at Proctor and Gamble. After the births of her daughters in 1980 and 1982, Carol began teaching elementary art in 1983 in the Jackson R2 School District.

While teaching at Jackson, Carol chaired the art department’s curricular alignment with the Missouri Assessment Program and the establishment of an art vertical team and Advanced Placement art courses. She also coordinated the district’s annual art exhibits, acquired grants for school improvements, artists-in resident programs, and professional development seminars on Disciplined Based Art Education. In addition to teaching at Jackson, she is also an adjunct instructor with Southeast Missouri State University’s art education department currently teaching Art for the Elementary Teacher, Techniques of Teaching Art, and the Block III field experience classes.

Carol has been past president of the Jackson R2 Community Teacher’s Association, Southeast Missouri Art Teacher’s Association, and the Art Council of Southeast Missouri. She has been awarded the Art Council’s Dingeldein Award and the Jackson Chamber of Commerce’s Teacher of the Year. Her research on children’s art has been published in a national art education journal and she also exhibits her artwork monthly at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her family and friends, swim and draw.
