Application Procedure

Department of Biology Graduate School Application Checklist

1. Prepare the Graduate School Application. 

  1. Meet minimum requirements:
    • A minimum of 30 hours of undergraduate course work in science and mathematics
    • At least 2.75 G.P.A. (4 point scale) for last 30 semester hours of undergraduate science and math courses
  2. Complete application for Graduate School
  3. Compose a one page (single spaced; 12 pt font; Times New Roman) letter of intent indicating your main areas of interest in your graduate application packet

2. Include Letters of Recommendation and Supplemental Application Material

  1. Have two letters of recommendation mailed to the Office of Admissions (address above). Send at least one letter of recommendation to Dr. Siegel at the address below.
  2. Take appropriate GRE and have your scores mailed to the Office of Admissions (address above). See Graduate School website for GRE requirements.
  3. Fill out Curriculum Designation and Faculty Agreement Form
    • Search for a faculty advisor (click here to view Faculty Research web page). One faculty member in Biology must agree to be your sponsor (advisor). An agreement by the faculty member must be secured from the faculty member and designated witht he Faculty Agreement Form. 
    • Mail form to:

3. Observe the Application Deadlines as follows:

Target Admission Semester

Submission Deadline

Spring October 1
Summer and Fall (preferred) April 1

 

4. Apply for a Graduate Assistantship (Optional)

Graduate Assistantships offer an opportunity to work teaching labs.  The assistantship includes a stipend and a tuition waiver (fees are still paid by the graduate student). 

To be considered for a graduate assistantship, fill out the Graduate Assistantship form  (note: international students cannot work as graduate assistants their first semester at Southeast per state guidelines)

  1. Meet one of the following minimum requirements
    • At least 2.70 G.P.A. (4.0 scale) if applying with only an undergraduate degree
    • A previous master’s degree
    • 9 hours of completed graduate level coursework in his/her degree program with at least a 3.5 graduate G.P.A. (4.0 scale).
  2. Mail completed Graduate Assistantship application to Dr. Siegel (address above) 

Applications for Graduate Assistantships can be turned in at any time. However, students who have not been admitted into the Graduate School will not be considered. In addition, assistantships are generally decided at the end of the spring semester (for fall assistantships) and the end of the fall semester (for spring assistantships). Therefore, Graduate Assistantship applications should be mailed at the same time as Graduate School applications for the best chance of receiving an assistantship.
