Networking Tips

Networking is not a one-time task, but a constant technique, an on-going process. Even if you are entering your first professional position, Networking is Key!

How do I begin to start networking?

  • First you must establish contacts. Begin with the contacts you already have in place, such as former employers, professors, relatives, friends, neighbors, club members, local chamber of commerce, and common interest associates.
  • Remember that these people may not be the most valuable people to talk to, but each contact does hold value. Your initial contacts have the potential to put you in contact with individuals who have the authority to make hiring decisions.

What are some points to keep in mind when networking?

  • Be Prepared! Some ways to be prepared are obvious, like having enough business cards when you need them. Other ways are less obvious. For example, when you get to a function, professional or personal, do you take a few minutes beforehand to think about what you want to get out of the function in terms of networking and what you are willing to give?
  • Be Open Minded! This is perhaps the golden rule of networking. Personal and professional contacts have a way of coming together to expand your resources. Choose contacts based on information, not position! The goal of networking is to share and acquire information.
  • Don’t be Afraid to Ask! You’ve kept an open mind and have been flexible and accumulated a huge card file of names, numbers, and descriptions of people who can help you. Don’t waste these resources and your time and energy by being too shy or embarrassed to ask for help!
  • Say Thank You!  Express your appreciation. If someone is helping you network, be certain to let him or her know how much you appreciate it. One of the best ways to say thanks is to tell the helper the outcome of the help.
  • Be Committed and Determined to do Whatever it Takes! Networking requires commitment and patience. It is an on-going process. You cannot build good networking relationships instantly; they take time to develop. In addition, you need to be determined. Not everyone is going to be eager to be a part of your network or thrilled to lend a helping hand. You will have to work at joining or developing a network.
