Yayoi Okada named 2003 BioKyowa Visiting Japanese Scholar
Southeast Missouri State University's Center for Faulkner Studies has announced the recipient of the 2003 BioKyowa Visiting Japanese Scholar award.
Yayoi Okada, Professor of Sociology at Kwansei Gakuin University, will visit Southeast later this year to conduct research in the Brodsky Faulkner Collection and participate in a number of cultural exchange activities.
Professor Okada is spending the current academic year at Cambridge University, where she is studying the religious works of Jeremy Taylor, a 17th century Anglican bishop whose book, Holy Living and Holy Dying, was one of Faulkner’s favorites.
Professor Okada has published studies of Faulkner, Taylor, T. S. Eliot, Henri Bergson, and others in a number of professional journals. At Southeast she will conduct research on Faulkner’s use of Christ figures in his novels and stories.
She belongs to the Japanese Association of William Faulkner, the Japanese Association of American Literature, and the Japanese Association of Christian Literature.
Her visit to Southeast will be sponsored by BioKyowa, Inc., a Japanese business firm that has offices in St. Louis and a manufacturing plant in Cape Girardeau.
