The Department of Chemistry has a long standing tradition of excellence in chemical education, and has been certified by the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Professional Training since 1968. Our programs are designed to prepare students for careers in chemistry and allied professions, and with eight different transcripted options leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry to choose from, students can more closely tailor their education to meet their professional goals. The B.S. in Chemistry program has four options to choose from (American Chemical Society Certified Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Chemistry, and DNA Analysis), the B.A. in Chemistry has three options to choose from (Chemistry, Forensic Science, and Business), and the B.S. in Education has two options to choose from (Chemistry Education and Unified Science Chemistry Education).

Students interested in careers in forensic science should choose one of our new forensics options. A recent survey of crime laboratory directors revealed that the majority of them prefer to hire applicants with a “hard” science degree, with a preference for chemistry degrees. Our forensics options provide students with a degree in chemistry that also includes a strong foundation in forensics. The Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Science options include coursework recommended by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for undergraduate forensic science degree programs. The DNA Analysis option provides a basic understanding of forensic DNA analysis, and is patterned after the educational requirements used by the FBI for DNA examiners/analysts.
Our students are well prepared to compete with graduates from other institutions as they pursue their professional careers. Many of our graduating seniors have excelled on the Major Field Achievement Test in Chemistry prepared by Educational Testing Services of Princeton, New Jersey. Since 1994, a majority of our graduating seniors who have taken the test have scored at or above the 50th percentile compared to the national norm, and nearly 30 percent have score at or above the 70th percentile. Our chemistry graduates have obtained employment at companies and labs such as Sigma-Aldrich, Eli Lilly, Proctor and Gamble, Exxon Mobil, Mallinckrodt, Monsanto, Dow Chemical, Pharmacia, the Indiana State Police Drug Crime Laboratory, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory. Others have been accepted into prestigious graduate programs in chemistry or professional schools of medicine, law, or optometry at universities such as: University of Missouri, Indiana University, University of Illinois, Vanderbilt University, John Hopkins University, Iowa State University, Purdue University, University of Wisconsin, and Washington University.
The Department is staffed with twelve outstanding faculty, ten of whom have their Ph.D. degrees. The chemistry program at Southeast encourages strong student-teacher relationships, emphasizing individual attention by faculty. There are many opportunities to pursue research and individual scholarship that help students become independent thinkers and problem solvers. Many of our students have presented papers at professional meetings and have coauthored papers published in chemical journals. Our students have opportunities for employment within the Department working as lab assistants, tutors, graders, and stockroom helpers. And several scholarships are awarded annually by the Department to recognize the academic achievements of our chemistry students.
In addition to our chemistry programs, the Department administers medical technology and pre-pharmacy programs. Our B.S. in Medical Technology (MT) program prepares students for careers in clinical and hospital labs, whereas the pre-pharmacy program allows students to complete one or two years towards a pharmacy degree. We also offer a masters degree program in applied chemistry which includes a program in forensic chemistry.
If you are looking at us for the first time, we would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you might have about our programs or the Department.
