Staging a Coop: Raising Backyard Chickens

Save money and eat healthy!

Have you ever had a farm fresh egg? There is no comparison between fresh and “fresh from the store.”  Today’s economy has refocused many people on the benefits of growing their own produce and even raising their own livestock. Raising chickens seems, for many, to be a winning solution - a hobby that gives you fresh eggs/meat with a minimal space/monetary investment …but is it really all it’s cracked up to be?

Find out how to do it right from start to finish in this class. We’ll cover preparation, breed selection, housing, food, and water, chickens and your garden, legalities and your neighborhood, hazards and health management, raising chicks, and collecting and storing eggs. You’ll leave this class with all your “eggs in a basket” to begin your own “eggsciting” hobby!

Dates/Time:  Friday, Sept. 11, 6-8 p.m.
Fee:  $20
Instructor:  Matthew John

Matthew John is chair of the agriculture program at Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus, Indiana. He is a frequent presenter and writer on various topics of small farm profitability. Matthew has taken his hobby of raising backyard chickens and turned it into a profitable business venture . He currently owns and operates Shady Lane Poultry and the Poultryman’s Supply Company.
