Arts & Crafts Discover the art of drawing your own portraits with charcoal! In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create life-like portraits of human faces using charcoal pencils. We’ll learn about the anatomy of the human face and discover the differences between face types. Using the deep contrast properties of charcoal, we’ll learn how to create convincing and powerful portrait drawings! Dates/Time: Tuesdays, February 17-March 10, 6-9 p.m. Peter Chanthanakone has a B.F.A. in Multimedia and Fine Art from McMaster University (Canada) and a M.F.A. in 3D Animation - Character Animation from the Academy of Art University, SF. Taught through the line of John Singer Sargeant, Peter Chanthanakone has also taught classical drawing at Brock University and digital drawing (illustration) at Grand Canyon University. Peter currently is an assistant professor at Southeast Missouri State University.
Make an easy, quick scarf! Join us for this hands-on knitting workshop where we will cover the basics of knitting. You will learn about various types of yarn, different kinds of stitches, and how to knit! Everyone will knit their own scarf in class out of one ball of yarn to take home! Dates/Time: Thursdays, February 26-March 19, 6-8:30 p.m. Sydney Egan has been knitting since she was a child. She has sold afghans, sweaters, baby items and more through a consignment business for many years.
Are you interested in making beautiful jewelry? In this short three-hour workshop, artist Carol Poole will teach the fundamentals of interlocking jump rings to make beautiful jewelry. Once the technique is mastered, we will follow a pattern to make a beautiful bracelet and a matching set of earrings. By the end of class you’ll take home a completed bracelet and set of earrings to wear or give as gifts. All you need to bring to class is good eyesight. All materials are included in course fee. Dates/Time: Monday, March 30, 6-9 p.m. Carol Poole is a local artist who has been making jewelry for over 15 years. Want to capture memories forever, but don’t know where to start? This workshop will help you begin the wonderful hobby of scrapbooking! You’ll learn all about the tools needed for scrapbooking, the different paper types used, different ways to embellish pages and techniques for organizing pictures. We’ll also show you different ideas for scrapbooks. By the end of this course, you will have a completed two-page spread to begin your own scrapbook. Say goodbye to boxes of photos shoved in storage at your house and hello to making beautiful scrapbook albums you can showcase for guests to see! She worked in a local store teaching scrapbooking workshops and also has a business where she sells homemade scrapbooks and other craft items at fairs and on her own.
Doggone Good Furr-tography Would you like to get better pictures of Fido or see Jane run without blurring around the image? We have the course for you! Photographer, Sean Magee, will walk you through the basics of digital photography from shutter-speed to aperture. This three-day course will also demonstrate how to take images from your camera and “play” with them in Photoshop. You’ll be amazed when Fido looks fluffier and Jane’s smile shines! Students must bring a digital SLR camera to class. Dates/Time: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, April 13, 15, & 17, 6-9 p.m. Sean Magee started his photography company, Magee Images, in 2005. Ready to cure your digital burnout? Our photo class is different from any you’ve taken before! In this class, you’ll discover the art of using a fun and fascinating plastic medium format camera: the Holga. Led by photographer Tom Neumeyer, you’ll learn how to use a toy camera to produce amazing images. One Holga camera for each student and your first roll of film is provided in the cost of the course. Dates/Time: Every other Monday, March 9-May 18, 6-8 p.m. Tom Neumeyer, a professional photographer and owner of Neumeyer Photography, has been creating photographic images since high school. Neumeyer has earned recognition for his photographs in competition, including regional and national awards. He works with both digital and film image capture processes for his commercial and documentary work. Neumeyer also authored Cape Girardeau Then and Now. This course is designed to provide the skills needed for investigation into artistic expression, conceptual development, and creative problem solving within the area of three-dimensional plaster carving. The class will focus on skill development, fundamental sculpture techniques, and safety. Each student will complete two sculptural pieces during the semester, one clay model and one plaster carving. Additional plaster will be available for the creation of more sculptures, if time and material permit. Demonstrations over relevant tools and processes will be conducted along with a critique to discuss and celebrate the final work. Dates/Time: Tuesdays/Thursdays, April 7-23, 6-9 p.m. Chris Wubbena is an assistant professor for the Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University. He has a master of fine arts in sculpture and currently teaches Sculpture I-III, Figurative Sculpture, and 3D Foundations. In addition to teaching, Chris also showcases his artwork in competitions, exhibitions, and invitationals across the country including Missouri, Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Iowa.
Learn a new craft and make something beautiful to take home! This course is for those with no previous experience who want to learn the basics of stained glass. Students will work through one “from scratch” project to gain an idea of the complexity of creating a stained glass design. This will be followed by a larger “pre-cut” project to focus on soldering techniques. The course will include:
