Ballroom & Social Dancing Want to impress your friends every Saturday night on the dance floor AND knock the socks off your family at the next wedding? Ballroom dancing is taught in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Traditional ballroom dancing will impress guests at weddings and formal events. Dancing is a way to meet new people, spice up the romance, and exercise! Students will learn a waltz, swing, cha-cha and two-step. If time permits, we may also learn a barn dance! Dates/Time: Thursdays, Oct. 15-Nov. 19, 6:30-7:45 p.m. Instructors Mike Buerck and Barb Fink met in 1994 and have been dancing ever since. Mike and Barb have developed a passion for teaching dance to “everyday” people who want to learn and have fun. They have been teaching for over 10 years and have shared their love of dance with people throughout the Southeast Missouri region. Mike and Barb are the reigning Kiwanis 50s and 60s dance champions and are avid students of dance who continuously look to add to their repertoire of dance moves.
Build-a-Blog Tap into the blogosphere. Have you wanted to dip into virtual writing? Get an overview of the different types of blogs, different host sites and learn what works for you. You’ll also get tips for success and general writing cues. Dates/Time: Thursdays, Oct. 29-Nov. 19, 6-7:30 p.m. Chris Harris came to Cape Girardeau in 2007 as the features editor at the Southeast Missourian. She started “Coming to Cape” as her professional blog and has since changed it to a broader “Features Stew” blog. A graduate of the University of Memphis Journalism School, she loves writing and thinks everyone should get the chance to do it.
The Evolution of the Vampire in Film: From Dracula to Twilight This course will take a look at how the vampire has developed throughout screen history (big and small). We‘ll look at films and television work from the silent era to present day and use these materials to examine how the vampire has evolved from a bloodthirsty creature of habit into a misunderstood romantic being with an alternate lifestyle. Some movies rated R. Must be over age 17 or have parental consent to attend. Dates/Time: Wednesdays, Sept. 30–Oct. 28, 6-8 p.m. Vernon Gravely has a bachelor’s degree in communication studies, a master’s degree in TESL, and master’s degree in English. Vernon’s interest in the vampire genre began before starting grade school, running home every day after kindergarten dismissed so he wouldn’t miss a moment of Dark Shadows.
Screenwriting: Writing your Story for the World Is there a movie inside of you that’s been yearning to get out but you don’t know where to begin? This class will teach you the fundamentals of screenwriting: character development, plot development, story structure and proper screenplay format, copyright issues and marketing strategies. Perhaps your screenplay will become the next Academy Award winning film. Short writing assignments are included. Dates/Time: Tuesdays, Oct. 6-27, 6-9 p.m. Shirlee Wilson received her M.F.A. in Film Production from the University of Utah. Shirlee has written, directed and produced documentaries and short films; however, her hobby (and true passion) is screenwriting. She has written several award-winning screenplays and her latest work, an adaptation of Ken Stilson’s “Fire Fly” co-written with her husband, is currently in production.
Kiss those two left feet goodbye and... Swing into the Holidays! This class is the perfect introduction to swing dancing. In this class you will learn several styles of swing all set to your favorite classic rock and swing tunes. Students will start with the basics and then work their way up to more flashy and complicated moves. Get ready to have a lot of FUN! No partner necessary, but recommended.
