The Enemy Among Us: German and Italian POWs in Missouri during World War II Did you realize that during WWII the U.S. government brought over 400,000 German and Italian POWs to the United States? Beginning in 1942, more than 15,000 of these enemy soldiers were sent to Missouri and held in 30 camps around the state.Join author, David Fiedler, for this presentation focused on the responses of Missourians, both regular citizens and those operating in official capacities, when they encountered the enemy and how they treated their weak and helpless foe. Contrary to common expectations, the camps were relatively pleasant places, and in fact the government was criticized for treating the prisoners too well. You may be surprised to learn there were camps near your own backyard! Join us to find out! Monday, February 23 David Fiedler has written for a number of newspapers and magazines as well as The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Syndicate. He is a bicycling enthusiast, and is currently the editor of the Bicycling site on About.com. David’s Missouri credits in print media include the Missouri Conservationist and Missouri Life magazines. The Enemy Among Us was David’s first book. He is also the author of Ballwin, a pictorial history of Ballwin, Missouri, and is presently working on a novel. David lives in St. Louis.
