Children and adolescents may experience grief in different ways than adults. Too much attention may be given to the troublesome behaviors of “system children,” with not enough attention paid to the grief and loss they are suffering when removed to the foster care system. To a child, a mom considered unfit by the system is still Mom! This workshop will discuss ways in which children may grieve, signs that they are grieving, and therapeutic techniques that may help them move through the grief stages. Cases will be discussed and opportunities offered for attendees to suggest original and creative ways to assist clients in this process. Dates/Time: Friday, Sept. 25, 1-4 p.m. Joyce A. Griffin, Ph.D., a Southern Illinois native, has worked for CenterPointe/Spirit of St. Louis Hospital for over 10 years. She has a bachelor’s in psychology from SIU and a master’s in psychological counseling from Southeast. She completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2003. *Call us at 986-6879 to find out how to receive a CEU discount if enrolling in both half-day counseling courses.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a psychosocial treatment model designed to treat post-traumatic stress and related emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents. The model has been adapted for use with children who have a wide array of traumatic experiences, including removal from family to be placed in foster care. This training is designed to assist trained therapists who deal with traumatized children, and who are interested in using evidence-based treatment models. The model uses parallel individual sessions with children and their parents (or guardians), with conjoint parent-child sessions increasingly incorporated over the course of treatment. It incorporates psychoeducation, parenting skills, teaching children to write their own trauma narrative, affect regulation, learning of relaxation techniques for self soothing and new coping skills and processing. Teaching of enhanced safety as a part of giving children comfort is also discussed. Strategies will be described and practiced. Dates/Time: Friday, Sept. 25, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Joyce A.
