Scholarships NORMAN L. BRAASCH SCHOLARSHIP
The Norman L. Braasch Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in biology with 60 credit hours. WILLIAM AVERY AND HELEN PEYTON BUCKNER SCHOLARSHIP The William Avery and Helen Peyton Buckner Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in one of the natural sciences. An eligible candidate must: The scholarship is renewable provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met.
CHEMISTRY ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP The Chemistry Alumni Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in chemistry.
M. AND A. EVENS CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP The M. and A. Evens Chemistry Scholarship is awarded to a member of the junior or senior class.
DR. DONALD FROEMSDORF COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP The Froemsdorf Scholarship will be available to students majoring in any one of the disciplines within the College of Science and Mathematics. The committee, giving due emphasis to quality of the scholastic records, designates recipients of the scholarship, as it is a merit scholarship. No application form is necessary.
GERSBACHER ZOOLOGY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Committee determines which, if any, candidate qualifies for the award as it is a merit scholarship. Contact the Department of Biology for more information.
BETTY BERRY GLENN SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Betty Berry Glenn Science Scholarship is made to any high school graduate who is majoring in any field of science. This graduate must be from one of the following counties: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Perry, Ripley, Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Scott, Stoddard or Wayne. Preference is given to students who have: (1) completed a minimum of 30 credit hours (2) at least a 2.500 grade point average. Cannot be given to nontraditional student. Preference to direct descendant of Betty and John Glenn. Renewable if previous year's recipient still meets criteria. Must reapply. Financial need will also be given consideration.
MICHAEL A. HALWACHS SCHOLARSHIP The Michael A. Halwachs Scholarship will be available to students majoring in any one of the disciplines within the College of Science and Mathematics. An eligible candidate must: (1) have GPA of 3.5 or above Scholarship is renewable if previous year’s recipient still meets criteria. Must reapply. B.F. AND CARRIE WOODBURN JOHNSON MEMORIAL MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP The B.F. and Carrie Woodburn Johnson Memorial Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in mathematics. An eligible candidate must: (1) have completed at least three courses above college algebra and trigonometry (2) have a 3.000 grade point average (3) show financial need. Recipients are chosen from applications solicited by the scholarship committee.
MEL KOHL, JR. SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Mel Kohl, Jr. Science Scholarship will be available for students pursuing a degree in any of the disciplines within the College of Science and Mathematics. An eligible candidate must: (1) have completed 30 hours (2) have a minimum of 2.0 GPA Financial need will be given consideration. Scholarship is renewable if previous year’s recipient still meets criteria. Must reapply.
J.C. and Dorothy S. MILLER SCHOLARSHIP The J.C. and Dorothy S. Miller Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in biological sciences or agriculture. An eligible candidate must: (1) have earned 60 hours of college credit (2) have demonstrated above average scholarship and leadership qualities Financial need will also be given consideration.
JOSEPH AND VIOLA NEEDY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Joseph and Viola Needy Memorial Scholarship will be available to students who have declared a major in mathematics, physics or chemistry, and have completed at least one major’s level course in chosen field. An eligible candidate must: (1) have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA Automatically renewable if previous year’s recipient still meets criteria; does not need to reapply.
S. DAVID NUNLEY SCHOLARSHIP The S. David Nunley Scholarship is for pre-pharmacy students or those who have shown an interest in attending pharmacy school. It is to be awarded on the basis of need to those students who: (1) maintain a B average or better. Students who have not yet attained a college grade point may apply during their first year, and utilize high school grades as their criteria. If no eligible students are identified, then scholarships may be awarded to students majoring in chemistry who show need, and who have maintained a B average. MARLIN AND RUTH (EVENS) REMLEY AND LOUISE REMLEY ENDOWED SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Marlin and Ruth (Evens) Remley and Louise Remley Endowed Science Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in the College of Science and Mathematics An eligible candidate must: (1) have a 3.0 GPA with a sophomore standing at the time the scholarship is awarded. (2) be a full-time student with a minimum of 12 credits while receiving award (3) must maintain GPA of 3.0 to continue scholarship second semester. Scholarship is renewable if previous year’s recipient still meets criteria; must reapply.
BRIAN M. SHAMEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Brian M. Shamel Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a marine biology major within the College of Science and Mathematics. Student must be a interested in pursuing research and saving the bottlenose dolphins. Scholarship is to be used to fund trip to the research lab which helps meet the requirements for the marine biology degree. Not renewable. Must have verified financial need according to the FAFSA. LA VERNE THOMPSON COMPUTER SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The La Verne Thompson Computer Science Scholarship is awarded to a computer science major exhibiting unusual interest in computer science and possessing the capability of pursuing graduate work in computing sciences as demonstrated by course work completed on this campus. The Department of Computer Science submits names of recipients to the College of Science and Mathematics Scholarship Committee by March 1. Recipients are selected by computer science faculty on the basis of the following criteria: ALBERT J. WEIS MEMORIAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Albert J. Weis Memorial Science Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in any of the disciplines within the College of Science and Mathematics. An eligible candidate must have: (1) earned 42 hours of college credit (2) a 2.0 grade point average (3) demonstrated sincere interest in college (4) financial need.
DR. ERNEST YEAKEY SCHOLARSHIP The Dr. Ernest Yeakey Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics. An eligible candidate must: (1) be a U.S. citizen (2) have a GPA of 2.75 or higher Scholarship is renewable if previous year’s recipient still meets criteria. Must reapply. PHYSICS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP 3289. PHYSICS ALUMNI. Open to beginning freshmen who are majoring in a program leading towards a B.S. degree granted by the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics. Applicant must have a minimum ACT score of 24. The past year's recipient may reapply for this scholarship provided they have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and are active participants in the Physics and Engineering Club. Deadline is May 1.
