The mission of the Office of Learning Assistance Programs and Disability Support Services is to provide services and assistance to students that are at-risk, to assist them in finding academic and personal success. Learning Assistance Programs are designed to teach skills and strategies to help students become independent and active learners. Through provision of various voluntary and mandatory services, Learning Assistance Programs can proactively and intrusively assist students in identifying barriers to their success and thusly identifying ways to address those barriers. Disability Support Services is the institutionally recognized program designated to provide federally mandated services for students with disabilities. By providing leadership, advocacy, mediation, and guidance to students with disabilities, Disability Support Services assists registered students with identifying barriers to their success and thusly identifying ways to address those barriers.
The vision of the Office of Learning Assistance Program and Disability Support Services is to foster and develop an academic environment that is accessible and equitable to all, regardless of disability, race, color, creed, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, gender, age, sexual orientation, or veteran’s status. Through the provision of services and programs both in person and online, the Office of Learning Assistance Programs and Disability Support Services strives to develop and retain students at Southeast through:
- Provision of programs that put student success at the center of focus
- Assisting members of the campus community to achieve to their highest personal potential
- Fostering a sense of personal responsibility and commitment to growth
- Development of transferable skills in and out of the academic setting
- Dissemination of information about access and equality
- Provision of training opportunities to increase and expand one’s ability to provide equitable services
- Advocacy for at-risk students

University Tutorial Services
Tutoring services are provided by Learning Assistance Programs, located in the University Center, Room 302. This service is available to all enrolled University students. All tutors for the Learning Assistance Programs have received an A or B in the courses they tutor or have been recommended by the academic department which offers the course.
To receive tutoring assistance either go by the office (UC 302) and complete a tutor request form, or go to the office website (www.semo.edu/lapdss) and complete the request form online.
Scheduled Study Sessions/Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Scheduled Study Sessions/Supplemental Instruction is offered in a select number of courses each semester and the sessions are led by trained student leaders who work closely with the faculty members for each course. Session are offered two to three times per week. The session schedules are posted on the office website each fall and spring semester, and sessions are free of charge.
College Success Seminars
College Success Seminars are designed to assist students with building and developing skills in both academic and personal enrichment categories. College Success Seminars are offered in person and online during the fall and spring semester and online during the summer semester. Some examples of seminar topics include:
- Time Management
- Study Skills
- Test-Taking Strategies
- Note Taking Strategies
- Stress Management
College Success Plans
Students seeking additional structured support during the semester may request to design a College Success Plan (CSP) with any LAP/DSS staff member. Plans typically are designed for a minium of 4 weeks btu may be put in place for an entire semester. A CSP typically addresses semester academic goals, and includes completing a learning style inventory, attending College Success Seminars, and individualized academic support.
Learning Assistance Programs and Disability Support Services, Career Linkages, and University Studies work together with undecided/exploratory students during the fall and spring semesters to assist these students in identifying academic strengths and areas of interest.
Academic Enhancement Program
Some students are admitted into the university through the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP). Students in AEP will meet with individual staff members, design individualized academic plans, and have access tp various resources across campus to address academic deficiencies and increase students ability to gain academic success.
Academic Improvement Plans
Students that have been suspended from the university and readmitted on appeal may be required to complete an Academic Improvement Plan (AIP). These plans are to be completed during the first half of each academic semester. Students required to complete an AIP will be contacted by LAP regarding orientation dates and times.
Disability Support Services
Students with disabilities wishing to have academic accommodations that ensure equal educational access should seek registration with Disability Support Services. Registration includes meeting with a DSS staff member, submitting paperwork that documents that nature of the student’s disability, and designing an implementation plan (Faculty Notification) regarding approved accommodations. Students that received assistance in high school through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and/or a Section 504 plan, should speak with a DSS staff member regarding possible services at Southeast. The office of Learning Assistance Programs and Disability Support Services is usually open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday during the fall and spring semesters.
