Southeast Grants & Scholarships

Southeast offers a variety of financial assistance programs based on specific award criteria.  You may receive:

Fee Waivers


Missouri Income Tax Credit: If you are an out of state student who works, or whose parents work in Missouri and pay Missouri income tax, you may be eligible for the Missouri Income Tax Credit.  All or a portion of the Missouri income tax paid may be used as a credit against the difference between in-state and out-of-state fees. Some scholarships awarded by Southeast cannot be combined with the Missouri Income Tax Credit.  An Undergraduate Missouri Income Tax Credit Application and a Graduate Missouri Income Tax Credit Application are available from Student Financial Services or by clicking on the appropriate link below. Performance-based scholarships are awarded by individual academic departments based on your interests, abilities and participation.  Because availability, application procedures, and eligibility requirements vary by scholarship and department, contact the department of individual interest.  The following are just a few of the performance-based scholarships offered.

School of Visual and Performing Arts. Available to beginning freshmen with a 21 ACT and 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. after six semesters and to community college transfer students with 24 transferable hours and 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. Additional criteria include:

  1. major or minor in art, theatre or dance; or in the case of performance areas, pursue active participation as defined by the department;
  2. demonstrate artistic promise judged by the awarding department.

Deadline is March 1.  Renewal criteria: 3.0 Southeast G.P.A., completion of 30 hours per academic year and approval of academic department chairperson. 

Air Force ROTC:  This is a competitive, two or three-year scholarship open to freshmen and sophomores.  You will compete with other students nationwide for nursing scholarships, pre-health scholarships and express scholarships.  The scholarship pays your incidental and general fees, your room in university housing, and a monthly stipend.  The Professional Officer Corps (POC) scholarship is available for juniors and seniors.  This scholarship pays up to $3,000 toward your incidental and general fees, $225 towards your books, and a monthly stipend.  For further information, contact the Air Force ROTC at Southeast Missouri State University at (573) 651-2184.

Communication Award:  If you have excellent academic credentials and demonstrated excellence in public speaking and competitive debate, you should contact the Department of Communication at (573) 651-2061.

Golden Eagles Marching Band Stipend:  This is a $500 to $1,000 award for members of the Golden Eagles Marching Band.  For further information, contact the Director of University Bands at (573) 651-2334 or (573) 651-2335.

Music Scholarship:  This scholarship is awarded to music majors and minors on a competitive basis by audition.  You may receive a music service award regardless of your discipline if you qualify by auditioning for membership in departmental performing ensembles.  For further information, contact the Music Department at (573) 651-2335 or (573) 651-2334.

National Guard:  This scholarship is available for ten active members of the Missouri National Guard (Air or Army).  To be considered, you must be in good standing and in an enlistment period that covers the entire year of the award.  Undergraduate applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and graduate applicants must have a 3.25 GPA.  You must type/print the commander’s name, grade and the unit’s address and your National Guard commander must sign and date your application to certify that you are an active member of the commander’s unit.  To be considered for continued yearly awards, you must complete a separate application available online or in Student Financial Services each year no later than July 1st.

Merit Scholarships


The Governor's, Regent's, President's Plus, President's and University Scholarships are awarded to beginning freshmen and are renewed on an annual basis. The Regional Achievement Award is awarded to beginning freshmen or community college transfer students and is renewed on an annual basis. The total of Southeast scholarship awards—including merit, endowed, sponsored and athletic—cannot exceed incidental and general fee charges.  To continue to receive a merit scholarship, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester and live on campus or with parents during your freshman and sophomore years. You must also meet all renewal criteria for your scholarship.

Governor’s Scholarship: This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The Governor's Scholarship pays incidental fees, general fees, and textbook rental for the equivalent of up to 32 hours per academic year (may include summer session) at Southeast and residence hall fees (fall and spring semesters only) in a standard, double-occupancy room with 15 meals per week.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

Regents’ Scholarship:  This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The Regents’ Scholarship pays incidental fees for the equivalent of up to 32 hours per academic year (may include summer session) at Southeast.

President's Plus Scholarship:  This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The President's Plus Scholarship is worth $2,500 ($1,250 per semester).

President’s Scholarship:  This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The President's Scholarships is worth $2,000 ($1,000 per semester).

University Scholarship:  This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The University Scholarship is worth $2,500 ($1,250 per semester). 

Regional Achievement Award: This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years, 128 credit hours (including transfer) or completion of the coursework for a Bachelor's degree, whichever occurs first.  To renew, you must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year. Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

The Regional Achievement Award is equal to the difference between incidental fees for in-state and out-of-state students for 32 credit hours per academic year (approximate annual value: $4,600).  It may be combined with a partial University Scholarship or Community College Scholarship for an additional $1,500 incidental fee scholarship per year.

To receive this award as a community college transfer student, you must reside within one of the 35 designated Illinois counties.  You must have completed a Southeast articulated program of study with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 or have completed 24 transferable credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.  You must live in the residence halls during your first year of enrollment at Southeast.

Southeast Family Achievement Award: This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years, 128 credit hours (including transfer) or completion of the coursework for a Bachelor's degree, whichever occurs first.  To renew, you must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year. Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.

The Southeast Family Achievement Award is equal to the difference between incidental fees for in-state and out-of-state students for 32 credit hours per academic year (approximate annual value: $4,600). It may be combined with a partial University Scholarship or Community College Scholarship for an additional $1,500 incidental fee scholarship per year. It may not be combined with the Regional Achievement Award.

G.E.D. Scholarship: This scholarship is renewable with the completion of 30 credit hours per year and a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Student Involvement Scholarships


Student Involvement Scholarships (the Missouri and Foundation Leadership Awards, Missouri Girl's State/Boy's State Leadership Awards, and the Renaissance Scholarship) are awarded to beginning freshman.  Only the Renaissance Scholarship can be renewed. 

The Renaissance Scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast, complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast, and live in the residence halls.  Summer hours taken at Southeast may be included.

Minority Mentor Program


This program provides minimum compensation of $1,500 annually for participation in a work/mentor program. The award is renewable for a second year upon mutual agreement of both the student and participating department. Minority students with an ACT score of 21 or above, a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, demonstrated performance in academic and extracurricular or co-curricular activities are invited to apply. To be considered for this program, submit the Minority Mentor Program Application which is required and available on-line or through the Southeast Admissions Office at (573) 651-2590.

Transfer Scholarships


These scholarships are available for students transferring to Southeast from an accredited community college.  These scholarships are awarded directly by Southeast and are based on your academic achievements.   

Outstanding Community College Student Scholarship
Value: $3000, renewable for a second year with a 3.5 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.  
Eligibility: Community College Presidents in the Southeast Missouri State University service region may nominate two students. Contact your community college’s financial aid office to determine your school’s eligibility. This award may not be combined with the Community College or Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Value: $500 (maximum of 25 awarded), renewable for a second year with a 3.50 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.  
Eligibility: Be a member of Phi Theta Kappa and have a cumulative 3.50 GPA and 24 or more transferable hours (may be combined with the Community College Scholarship).  
To Apply: send a photocopy of your Phi Theta Kappa membership card or certificate, or submit a letter of recommendation from the Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisor.  
Deadlines: Fall deadline is June 1; Spring deadline is November 1.

Community College Scholarship
The Community College Scholarship is awarded to students who have earned 24 or more transferable credit hours and 3.50 cumulative GPA at a value of $1500 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents); or to students who have earned 24 or more transferable credit hours and a 3.75 cumulative GPA at a value of $2000 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents);  or to recipients of an Associate’s Degree with a 3.25 cumulative GPA at a value of $1500 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents). Renewable for a second year with a 3.50 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.  
To Apply: Applicants for Admission transferring from a community college are automatically considered for this award. No separate application is required.  
Deadlines: Fall deadline is June 1; Spring deadline is November 1.
