Around Town

The first long-distance telephone call was made in Cape Girardeau?

It’s true! The first long-distance call was made Dec. 18, 1877, to another neighboring city to let the merchants know the steamboats had arrived. You’ll soon discover the uniqueness and richness of this city and will come to think of this college town as your second home! Cape Girardeau is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River and has a rich heritage associated with the famous author Mark Twain, the Trail of Tears, the Civil War and the Lewis and Clark Expeditions. Currently, Cape Girardeau has more than 120 restaurants to satisfy any appetite; more than 85 retailers, including those in Westpark Mall, to fulfill any shopper’s desires; and, two major movie theatres to accommodate any movie critic. In addition, Cape Girardeau hosts the annual City of Roses Music Festival, arts and crafts festivals, jazz festivals and much more!
