Committee on Admission and Retention in the
Teacher Education Program (CARTEP)
This committee is chaired by the Coordinator of Admission to Teacher
Education (currently the same person who serves as the COE Advising
Coordinator). The committee which officially approves candidates who
have completed all requirements for teacher education is composed of
representatives from the COE departments as well as from the
professional community including the University Registrar . CARTEP
also includes teachers and administrators from local public schools.
A student representative also sits on the committee in order to
provide student input but does not review student test scores or
other confidential information of the candidates being approved for
admission. This committee plays a vital role in that decisions to
require higher standards or in some way modifications of the
standards required start with this committee. Members from the public
school are able to provide feedback on the quality of teachers being
employed by the schools and in turn can suggest
additional requirements in addition to supporting or opposing
requirements that are discussed such as the recently implemented
background check for all teacher education students before they
participate in a field experience during the professional blocks.
The
CARTEP Committee meets once each Spring and Fall semester.
