  • Log on at www.chalkandwire.com/semo with the username and password that were e-mailed to you. (If you have forgotten your username and/or password, contact the Chalk and Wire help desk at chalkandwire@semo.edu to obtain this information.)
  • From the dashboard, click on the "Assessment" drop-down menu and then click on "Assess."
  • You will see a list called "Pending Assessments." You can make the column wider or narrower by clicking the arrow in the right-hand side of the row to toggle the width.
  • Next click on the name of the student that you wish to assess and click on the "Assess" link that will be displayed below the student"s name after you click on it
  • On the right side of the screen you will see any files and text that have been uploaded by the student. To download a document, click on the filename and save it to your machine, just as you would an e-mail attachment.
  • On the left side of the screen, you will see a column titled "Assessment." In it, you will find the scoring rubric under the area labeled "Criterion."
    • The rubric initially displays in "collapsed" form, meaning only the criteria and scores appear, as well as "comment bubbles" that you can click on to add additional comments. If you are familiar with the descriptions for each level of each criterion, you may want to grade in this "collapsed" version.
    • If you prefer, you can expand the rubric by clicking the arrow in the upper right-hand side of the "Assessment" column. In the expanded version, the descriptions for the criteria and scores are also displayed, and text boxes are provided for additional comments.
  • Regardless of which format you prefer, to grade the assignment, you will simply click on the appropriate value for each criterion; the value you select will turn green. If you have additional comments to add, click on the appropriate text box/comment bubble and type your comment. As you score, you will receive a message at the top of your screen advising that you have unsaved changes. You can save periodically as you go by clicking "Save Now," or wait until you have graded the entire assignment.
  • If you decide that you would like to change a score, simply click on the new value. If you would like to clear all of the changes you have made since the last time you saved, click the "Clear Changes" button located next to the green "Save Now" button. Any time you make a change, you will have to click "Save Now" for the changes to be recorded.
  • If you have graded the student"s work electronically, upload the file with your corrections by using the box titled "Attach Annotated File" that can be found below the rubric table. Click the "Browse" button to find your file and then upload it by click the "Upload" button once you have located it, just as you would with an e-mail attachment. You should see a green bar advising, "File has been uploaded."
  • Once you have finished filling the rubric table and attaching any documents, you can add any overall comments in the box located at in the lower left-hand corner of the assessment screen
  • Once you have finished assessing the assignment and you have saved everything, a green "Final Score" row will show at the top of the page.
  • Chalk & Wire will hold the assessments until you tell it to release them. To release assessments, do the following:
    • From your dashboard, you will see an area called "My Unreleased Assessments." Click on the number to access your unreleased list.
    • To release assessments, in the last column (labeled "Release") click either "Select All" or click on the individual check boxes of the assessments you want to release, then click on the "Release" link.
  • Click the "Return" button located in the upper right-hand corner of the assessment screen to return to the dashboard and assess the next assignment.
