Welcome
Greetings, and thank you for your interest in the College of Education here at Southeast Missouri State University. Here in the College of Education, our mission is to prepare and sustain leaders in teaching, counseling, and educational leadership.
Southeast’s College of Education is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) as a unit, and all 27 initial teacher preparation programs and all 10 advanced teacher preparation programs are accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). These national and state accreditations and Southeast’s strong program requirements and reputation offer our graduates enhanced opportunities when searching for and obtaining employment nationwide.
If you are interested in undergraduate programs:
Southeast’s education program differs from that of many other universities by providing you with extensive field experience, beginning with first-hand classroom training and observation during your freshman year and continuing through student teaching during your senior year. As a student in Southeast’s education program, you will receive a full semester of on-the-job student teaching experience, as opposed to the traditional eight or nine weeks of training, thus better preparing you for a career in education.
Southeast’s education program’s unique block format, in addition to providing increased professional experience, allows you to meet other students with your major early on, thus enabling you to form common bonds and establish professional relationships with others in your field. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to personally experience another culture’s educational system through international student teaching programs, including our newest partnerships with Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University in Ukraine and Balboa Academy in Panama.
If you are interested in graduate programs:
Our graduate programs offer a level of rigor in the classroom, coupled with experiential learning opportunities, that will prepare you for the next step in your career path. Both our mental health counseling and school counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP), while our Educational Leadership degrees are accredited by NCATE, DESE, and the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC). In the field of Educational Leadership, we offer advanced degrees in both P-12 and higher education, including master’s degrees, specialist’s degrees, and a statewide cooperative doctor of education in partnership with the University of Missouri.
The College of Education also maintains relationships with P-12 partner institutions in the region, and with friends of the College who help make possible experiences such as the Transitioning Academy, which provides students with disabilities the opportunity to get a taste of the college experience before classes begin, and opportunities such as the upcoming Jean Whitaker Demonstration Classroom, a state-of-the-art classroom that will link the art and science of teaching in preparing and sustaining effective teachers and educational leaders.
Candidates from the College are prepared to be educational leaders who are competent, reflective, and caring professionals through a carefully designed program of study. Incorporating effective use of technology and through placements in diverse settings, we prepare life-long learners through literacy. The College of Education seeks to be the College of Education of first choice for candidates, faculty and staff, employers in schools and public service agencies, and first in the hearts and minds of our alumni. We hope you will take a look at what the College has to offer, and schedule a tour or a time to speak with an advisor to see if the College of Education is right for you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tamela Randolph Interim Dean of the College of Education
