Southeast Missouri State University

The Extended Learning program at Southeast offers a wide variety of courses and programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In some cases, substantial course work may be completed at off-campus locations; however some course work may be required on campus depending on the individual's educational goals. In other cases, all course work towards a degree is offered at the off-campus location through a combination of on-site instruction, instruction by ITV, Web, and Webinar courses.

Agribusiness - Plants and Soils Option (B.S. Degree)

All Agribusiness programs share a common core which includes agricultural economics, management, marketing, sales, finance and policy. The specialization in Plants and Soils combines study in the natural sciences with study in crop science, soil science, and/or horticultural science. Graduates are prepared to become ARCPACS certified agronomists, soil scientists or horticulturalists. Lectures are delivered by ITV with on-site, hands-on lab experiences.

Business: Organizational Administration (B.S.B.A. Degree completion program)

The major in organizational administration leads to the B.S. degree in Business Administration and prepares individuals for a wide variety of professional opportunities in the world of business management -- from the multifaceted responsibilities of a small or family-owned business to the complex skills required to enter the larger corporate environment. The BSBA degree at Southeast is accredited by the AACSB International Association of Management. Courses in both the BSBA required core, required support, and general education (University Studies) courses are offered each semester at the locations below. Students then may opt to complete an undergraduate business program at the Cape Girardeau campus or the Organization Administration degree through Southeast Online.

Child Development (B.S. Degree)

Child Care and Guidance degree is designed for those seeking management careers in the day care or nursery school environment. Individuals may use course work towards state certification in child care, the two-year associate's degree or bachelor's degree. The emphasis is on bachelor's-level training. Counseling (Master's degree)

This part-time program is designed for teachers and other working professionals. The cohort program offers two courses each semester: one at the regional campus and the other in a three-weekend format at the Cape Girardeau campus. Both specializations in school and in mental health counseling are available. Students in the cohort program take two courses each semester, including summers, and will be able to complete the required 48 hours in about two-and-a-half years.

Criminal Justice (B.S. Degree - Cohort Program)

Beginning Fall 2008, the B.S. in Criminal Justice Degree will be offered in a cohort format to regional campuses in Kennett, Malden, Sikeston and Perryville. In the cohort program, students are expected to begin and complete the Criminal Justice courses together over a two year period. A second cohort beginning in Fall 2012 is tentatively planned.

Early Childhood Education (B.S. Degree)

After completing this degree program, individuals are qualified to teach in elementary schools (prekindergarten-3rd grade) and in public and privately funded child care centers. Students in the program learn not only about the education of young children, but also child development, nutrition, first aid, children’s literature and child psychology. Lecture is delivered to both Malden and Sikeston through ITV. The Sikeston Child Development Laboratory, own and operated by Southeast, provides the optimal setting to observe and work with infants, toddlers and pre-school children, applying theories and techniques taught in the classroom.

Educational Leadership (Master and Specialist courses)

The Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling offers graduate courses in a variety of locations throughout the Southeast service region for professional teachers seeking career advancement into school administration as either a principal or superintendent. Individuals can complete essentially all degree requirements by attending courses at two or more locations. In addition, broad-based development of Web courses is ongoing.

Elementary Education (B.S. Degree)

The major in elementary education leads to the B.S. degree and serves to provide top-level training and experiential learning for those seeking a career in teaching grades 1-5. The degree program in Malden is a daytime program designed for individuals prepared for full-time study involving two to three days per week; however, the programs in Kennett and Poplar Bluff are full-time evening programs to serve the fully employed adult student. All students complete the junior year through off-campus courses. Course work is also available off campus for the senior year, but students may find it beneficial to take some on-campus courses depending on area of emphasis.

Exceptional Child Education (B.S. Degree)

Exceptional children are those who differ from normal or average children in intellectual, behavioral or physical characteristics to the extent that special educational services or facilities are required. Effectively teaching students who are learning disabled, mentally handicapped, behavioral disordered, severely developmentally disabled and/or are gifted requires special knowledge and skills. This program leads to certification in Cross-Categorical Services.

General Studies (B.G.S. Degree)

Individuals whose career goals require a broad-based academic preparation without a specific major and/or minor field will find the B.G.S. degree appealing because of its wide flexibility of curriculum. Rather than completing a 30+ hour major, students select from the broadest possible selection of lower- and upper-division course work.

The Bachelor of General Studies, all needed courses will be available through the internet with Southeast Online and/or in conjunction with on-site courses. Individuals can combine Web courses with off-campus offerings at any of the University's regional campuses and sites.

Technology Management (B.S. Degree completion program)

The B.S. Degree in Technology Management is intended to prepare those with technical Associate of Applied Science Degrees interested in or already involved in technical fields and environments for supervisory and management positions in industry and manufacturing. Southeast's off-campus degree completion program started as a cooperative agreement with St. Louis Community College and the University of Missouri -- St. Louis, and has expanded to include other academic institutions.

Middle School Education (B.S. Degree)

The Middle School undergraduate program leads to certification for teaching in middle schools (grades 5-9). The program is designed to prepare competent professional teachers through structured field-based experiences. Secondary Education (Master and Specialist courses)

The master's in secondary education is designed for practicing teachers who wish to enhance their understanding of the educational process and expand their skills in the operation of the successful learning environment. As well, graduate-level training in secondary education is useful to those seeking preparation in school administration. The curriculum combines professional education courses with graduate-level content area courses. Most professional education courses are offered off campus through on-site, ITV and Web instruction. Students normally take content area courses on campus.

Cohort Modeling

The secondary education master's program is offered on a cohort model. All students in a given cohort begin, track through and complete the curriculum cycle as an entity. Admission after the beginning of a cohort cycle is not normally advised; however, interested individuals should contact the academic department to inquire about plans for future cohort groups.

"University Studies" is the general education program at Southeast and constitutes about one third of a baccalaureate degree program. It is that part of the collegiate curriculum that acquaints the student with a wide range of topics that provides individuals with a broad-based, well-rounded interdisciplinary education.
