Bill 12-A-2 Revising the "Service" Description of Faculty Professional Responsibilities by Establishing a "Policy" Section (Approved)
FACULTY SENATE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY
FACULTY SENATE BILL 12-A-2
Approved by the Faculty Senate
February 1, 2012
REVISING THE “SERVICE” DESCRIPTION OF FACULTY PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES BY ESTABLISHING A “POLICY” SECTION
BE IT RESOLVED THAT: subject to the passage and approval of both this bill and its companion bill establishing a corresponding “procedures” section, Chapter 3, Section E of the Faculty Handbook be amended by making the following changes to the existing content, thereby establishing a “policy” section (with the companion “procedures” to follow it in the Handbook):
Striking the existing sections entitled, “Sponsorship of Student Organizations” and “Student Recommendations,” inserting a section of text under the original heading “Service,” and deleting a portion of the text under the heading, “Commencement,” so that the resulting Section E of Chapter 3 read as follows:
Service is identified in the Faculty Tenure and Promotion Policy as one of the “critical areas” in which faculty can make a contribution to the University, the community, and the profession, and by which they are judged for purposes of tenure, promotion, and merit. Service to the University may take many forms including, but not limited to, academic advising, membership and leadership on committees, sponsorship of student organizations, providing student recommendations, and participation in commencement exercises. Faculty members should consult their departmental Promotion and Tenure criteria to understand how service is construed in their own department.
Commencement exercises are held two times annually – in the winter and spring.
