Minutes - April 25, 2001
The Faculty Senate of Southeast Missouri State University met on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at 3:00 p.m. in the Party Room of the University Center. The following Senators were present: Ali, Althaus, Bernstein, Bugle, Chamberlain, Chong, Dalton, Dillon, Dunavan, Eddleman, Farris, Gifford, Hecht, Heitman, Kephart, Kraemer, Lloyd, Loso, McMahan, Naugler, Rainey, Ricks, Roberts, Schoonmaker, Sutton, Tibbs, Tikoo, Venezian, Willingham, and Wilson. Alternates Keller and MacLeay were present, as were Provost Stephens and Dr. Brenda Johnson.
Approval of the Minutes
The Vol. XXXV No. 12 Minutes were approved as corrected. (Farris/Chong).
Report from the Chair
Chair Sutton did not have a report to present. Chair Sutton was late coming to the meeting and Chair Elect Eddleman conducted the meeting.
Report from the Administrative Liaison
Provost Stephens did not have a report. She stood for questions, including an update on searches for administrative personnel. She reported that three candidates will be on campus to interview for Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research.
Senator Hecht, chair of the Committee, presented a summary report of the items the committee had worked on during the past year. He also suggested items that the Committee considered to be important for the coming year. (See Addendum A)
Senator Naugler, chair of the Committee, presented a summary report of what the Committee had discussed during the past year. He suggested that the Compensation Committee be made a reporting committee and not a legislative committee. He also suggested that at least half of the committee not be on the Senate. He suggested former chairs and others who are familiar with the process.
Senator Schoonmaker, chair of the Committee, summarized the work the Committee had done during the past year.
Senator Althaus, chair of the Committee, distributed copies of the summary report of the Committee's activities for the past year. (See Addendum B)
Dr. Brenda Johnson, chair of the Committee, reported that the Committee had received and made a recommendation concerning one grievance during the past year.
Senator Farris, chair of the Committee, reported that the following Senate positions have been filled this week. Mark Langenfeld (Senator) and Craig Elder (Alternate) Department of Health and Leisure; and Anne Marietta (Senator) and Carolyn Cogswell (Alternate), Department of Human Environmental Studies. Hamner Hill has been elected by the Department of Philosophy and Religion to complete the remaining unexpired Senate term of Bambi Robinson. Al Hayward will serve as his Alternate. Communication Disorders and Criminal Justice are the only two departments that are not represented on the Senate.
Senator Chamberlain, chair of the Committee, presented a summary report of the Committee's work during the last year. (See Addendum C)
Faculty Emeritus Status
Senator Hecht moved that the proposed bill be removed from the table and the Senate concurred. (The bill had been discussed at the previous meeting and several amendments had been suggested The Senate had voted to table the bill and discuss it again at today's meeting.) Senator Chamberlain distributed a clean copy of the bill with the suggested changes included. Discussion followed. Senator Hecht called for the question. All were in favor. The motion to approve the bill carried. One suggestion was to consult with the affected parties regarding some of the proposed benefits and privileges for emerita faculty. (See Addendum D)
The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
