Grievance Committee
The Grievance Committee met over the summer to consider a petition that did not ultimately rise to the level that would require faculty senate endorsement of a specific complaint.
As a result of the above deliberations, the committee recommends that the appropriate faculty senate committee clarify the meaning of the faculty handbook statement that department chairpersons “not participate in [department promotion and tenure advisory] committee deliberations.” There are conflicting interpretations concerning the term “participation.” Some suggest the term means no chair involvement of any kind (including attendance); others have suggested that attendance and “information sharing” is permissible non-participatory action. The scope of the chair’s role needs to be clarified.
