Resolution 04-03 Tenure and Cap on Non-Tenure Track Faculty

SENSE OF THE SENATE REGARDING TENURE AND THE CAP ON NON-TENURE-TRACK FACULTY

WHEREAS: tenure exists to provide “freedom of teaching and research and of extramural activities”, and “a sufficient degree of economic security to make the profession attractive to men and women of ability” ,

WHEREAS: the University has a well earned reputation for quality faculty and majors,

WHEREAS: the high percentage of full professors who applied for and were given post-professorial merit demonstrates that tenured faculty serve the university well by providing high quality instruction and remaining active in their fields,

WHEREAS: the American Association of University Professors recently reaffirmed “its 1980 and 1993 recommendations that no more than 15 percent of the total instruction within an institution, and no more than 25 percent of the total instruction within any department, should be provided by faculty with non-tenure-track appointments.” ,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: it is the sense of the Senate that its authorization of an upward revision in the cap of non-tenure-track faculty from 15% to 20% (Faculty Senate Bill 03-A-07) was a response to a temporary financial emergency, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: it is the sense of the Senate that after the temporary financial emergency is behind us, the cap will be once again lowered to 15% as quickly as is judiciously possible.
