Enrollment at Southeast Missouri State University exceeded 11,100 in fall 2010 with students from nearly 50 states and 45 foreign countries.
Small classes are a priority at Southeast. Less than 1 percent of courses seat more than 50 students, with the majority of courses capped at 25 to 35 students.
Real World Experience
The opportunity for real-world experience is guaranteed to every Southeast student. More than 90 percent of Southeast students take advantage of real-world experiences through internships, clinical opportunities, student teaching, research assistantships, studying abroad and other learning opportunities outside the classroom.

Full-time faculty—not teaching assistants—teach the vast majority of courses, beginning with the freshman year. More than 75 percent of Southeast faculty have doctoral degrees, including some from prestigious institutions such as Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Dartmouth, to name a few.

Southeast business majors score in the top 25 percent on the national Major Field Achievement Test in Business.
Medical School Admissions
Academic preparation, hands-on learning, specialized advisors and community resources combine to make our graduates successful medical professionals. In fact, Southeast graduates are admitted to medical schools at a rate well above the national average.
Student Transitions takes students from orientation to career planning to hands-on learning opportunities to job placement or graduate school. This is administered through a coordinated, integrated delivery of services and support designed to help students make successful transitions into college, majors and career paths, and into the world of professional and community life.

College of Education - One of 20 Model Programs in the Nation
One of 20 model programs in the nation, Southeast’s College of Education, is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is featured by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The college received the “Best Practice Award for Global and International Teacher Education” from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) and is a member of the prestigious Renaissance Group of Institutions and the Coalition of Universities and Businesses for Education (CUBE).
National and International Accreditations
National accreditation require academic programs to meet rigorous standards. Southeast holds an impressive list of elite national and international program accreditations, including accreditations in mass communication, business, engineering physics, music, social work, nursing and chemistry.
Princeton Review has listed the Donald L. Harrison College of Business among the top business programs in the nation for the past five years. The College is accredited by AACSB International – an honor held by only 10 percent of institutions offering business degrees worldwide.
Mass Communication Program Accredited – One of Just 113 Institutions Nationwide
One of just 113 institutions nationwide, Southeast has achieved accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) in all five professional mass communication programs: advertising, journalism, public relations, radio, and television and film. The only other accredited Missouri institution is the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Study Abroad Opportunities are Expansive
Students can spend from as little as a week to an entire semester studying overseas. No matter where in the world you want to go, you can go with Southeast. Exchange programs, where students pay only Southeast tuition are available throughout Europe, Asia, Central and South America. Many are taught in English. Airfare scholarships are available, so a semester overseas costs about the same as staying in southeast Missouri. Additionally, short-term programs offer a variety of locations during winter break, spring break and pre-summer/summer. Internationalize yourself in today’s global workplace.
Nationally Recognized Department of Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages is recognized by the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages as one of the nation’s 30 model programs for foreign language education.
Nationally Accredited Industrial and Engineering Technology Programs
The Engineering Technology major is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org), the Industrial Technology major is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE), and the Industrial Education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The historic preservation program has full membership in the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE), confirming they have passed the strictest scrutiny. It is among a small number of programs in the nation to receive full benefits from NCPE membership, which can translate into internships for undergraduates. Historic preservation majors have enjoyed internship opportunities at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., the Navy Museum in Washington, D.C., Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, the Harry S. Truman Home in Independence, Mo., Fort Ticonderoga in New York and others too numerous to mention.
The U.S. Marshals Service
In 2003, our criminal justice program became one of only 37 programs nationwide selected to partner with the U.S. Marshals Service. This partnership, the only one in Missouri, provides our students the opportunity to intern with this impressive organization and offers the possibility of employment after completion.
Recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence
Southeast is the only institution nationwide to be named a two-time recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in education and in science and math.
The Southeast Missouri University Foundation
In the past 25 years, the Southeast Missouri University Foundationhas been able to accomplish much through the support of many generous alumni and friends of the University. Some major accomplishments include:

- More than 425 scholarships made available to Southeast students
- More than $13 million raised for the construction of the River Campus
Southeast's River Campus sits on the banks of the Mississippi River and provides a dynamic setting for the home of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. When the campus opened in 2007, Southeast became Missouri’s only institution with a campus dedicated exclusively to the disciplines of art, dance, music and theatre.
