Why Should I Study Educational Leadership at Southeast?

The Educational Administration program at Southeast is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and nationally recognized by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council. The Southeast Program has a very experienced faculty with a wealth of experience in leadership positions as well as extensive research in the area of educational leadership.

The Cooperative Ed.D. offers educational leaders or those who aspire to be educational leaders in southeast Missouri to participate in a quality doctoral program from the University of Missouri, with most of the course work being offered on the campus of Southeast Missouri State and being taught by Southeast faculty. This professional degree is an advanced study of educational leadership for a variety of educational leadership positions in public and private education, government, and industry. The goal of the program is to enhance the knowledge and competencies of leaders so they may provide optimal conditions for the education of youth and adult learners.

The Ed.D. is a cohort program with new students admitted into the program on odd numbered years. The program was designed to accommodate the busy schedules of practicing professionals. The regional delivery model has allowed 95% of students who began the program in the first four cohorts complete the coursework component of the program. Graduation rates are higher than those observed for more traditionally delivered doctoral programs. For example, the graduation rate for the first cohort was at 82% at the end of 2005.

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must hold at least a Master's degree to be considered for admissions. For more information, please consult the Graduate Bulletin.

Accreditations

Both the Department of Educational Administration and Counseling at Southeast Missouri State University and the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri-Columbia are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Advising procedures/information

Ed.D. students will have a dissertation advisor at the Southeast campus and will have the opportunity to choose a dissertation committee from faculty teaching in the program.

Career Opportunities

Leadership positions if both PreK-12 school districts and Higher Education. The following are positions held by the 75 students of Cohorts 1-3 who reported their positions at the time of graduation. 26 principals and assistant principals;7 superintendents;7 school coordinators/directors for special education, curriculum, technology, and accountability; 4 oth PreK-12 leadership positions including teacher and counselor; 3 registrars/assistant registrars; 4 deans or assistant deans of students or development; 11 assistant/associate professors, lecturers, instructors at higher education institutions; 2 vice-presidents/assistant vice presidents of student affairs; 4 directors/associate directors: University Unions, lab school, academic outreach, career and program support; 2 instructor/coaches at institutions of higher education; 2 coordinators in higher education: school to career and disability services; and 3 other leadership positions: division chair, agricultural specialist and foundation director.

Facilities

Summer classes will take place in the month of July on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Fall and Winter classes will take place in the Scully Building on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The classrooms at Southeast will be equipped with a technology package and 14 wireless laptop computers for student use.
