Why Should I Study Master of Arts in History at Southeast?

The Master of Arts in History prepares the student in the development of a knowledge base in history, the ability to locate and gather information, capabilities for critical thinking and analysis, and the ability to communicate historical knowledge.  Experience gained in the Master’s program prepares the student to pursue a Ph.D. in history or move into other areas where historical knowledge can easily lead to employment.  Students seeking a graduate degree that provides intellectual challenge and a sense of camaraderie will find the Department of History a welcoming place.

Options/Areas of Emphasis: The Department of History three areas of emphasis: Research, Historic Preservation, and Social Studies.

The Research Emphasis in history prepares the student for advance professional study or career placement.  Students will enhance investigative and communicative skills acquired as undergraduates and demonstrate their mastery of historical skills through a program that integrates extensive research in a special topic with a breadth of knowledge in complementary subjects.

The Teaching Emphasis better prepares the student for social studies teaching in the secondary schools.  Students will enhance competencies in the subject matter acquired as undergraduates and demonstrate an understanding of current trends and practices in curriculum development and instructional theory.

The Historic Preservation Emphasis prepares the student for further study or career placement in museums, historical sites or agencies.  Students choosing the historic preservation emphasis will take a series of courses designed to familiarize them with issues in public history, material culture, the historic landscape, and the built environment.  Students will participate in field exercises and projects that take history out of the classroom and into public venues.

Admissions Policies/Requirements: To be admitted to the Graduate Program in History, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree and 24 hours of undergraduate history.  In addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the Department of History requires three letters of recommendation which attest to the applicant’s academic and/or professional achievement, the general examination of the GRE, an academic or professional writing sample, and a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in history and/or related disciplines.  An applicant lacking any of the above requirements may, under certain circumstances, be admitted provisionally.

Courses and Curriculum: The Graduate Program in History requires 36 credit hours to graduate; 15 hours of core courses, and 21 hours of required and/or elective courses determined by the chosen emphasis. See the Graduate Bulletin for details.

Advising procedures/information: Every student will have an advising session with the Graduate Advisor every semester before enrolling in course work, or selecting areas for comprehensive examinations or thesis topic.

Career Opportunities: Students graduating from the Graduate Program in History have been accepted into Ph.D. programs at numerous institutions including the University of Leeds, England, the University of Kentucky, and the University of North Texas. Others have found employment in the State Office of Historic Preservation in Mississippi, Alaska, and North Dakota, the US Forest Service in Virginia, and the Adirondack Architectural Heritage in New York to mention but a few.
