Why Should I Study Industrial Management at Southeast?

The Master of Science in Industrial Management program at Southeast is designed with the help from industries we serve in the Southeast Missouri and St. Louis regions. The curricula for the graduate program have been designed to incorporate appropriate theories and practices utilized in “real-world” applications for addressing the needs of modern industries. It is also designed to serve technical managers, production supervisors, engineers, technicians, and related types of individuals who wish to study full-time or part-time to prepare for or enhance their leadership positions in industry and related enterprises. Upon completing the program, graduates will serve as effective leaders, supervisors, and managers in technical enterprises.

The Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology is recognized as a “Center of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology” and has programs accredited by the National Association of Industrial Technology. The Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology has been identified as one of three Missouri baccalaureate programs identified in the Missouri State Plan for Postsecondary Technical Education to assist with the enhancement of undergraduate and graduate technical education.

The Industrial Management program is designed to:

Develop advanced competencies needed by technical managers, supervisors, and related positions in world-class industries and related enterprises.
Broaden the career potential of individuals through the ability to implement systems, increase productivity, and improve product quality.
Develop a broad perspective needed for those employed in, or aspiring to, positions of responsibility in industry

Admissions Requirements: For consideration, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. For more information, please consult the Graduate Bulletin.

Accreditations: The Master of Science in Industrial Management program is endorsed and supported by industry leaders in the Southeast Missouri and St. Louis regions. The Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology also has a state designation as a Center of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing.

Career Opportunities: Potential careers for graduates of Master of Science in Industrial Management program includes job titles such as QA/QC Managers, Safety Supervisors, Facility Managers, Technical Managers, Engineering Managers, Production Supervisors, etc. Graduates of this program have found career opportunities and/or advancements with companies such as Nordenia, TG Missouri , Dana Corporation, UPS and Tyco Health Care.

Real-World Experience: The department provides opportunities for its students to participate in experiential learning opportunities with industries in Southeast Missouri and St. Louis where they engage in research-related activities for solving “real-world” application problems. Examples of industries that have participated in such activities include but are not limited to, Proctor & Gamble, TG Missouri, Tyco Health Care, Missouri Department of Transportation and Southeast Missouri State University's Facilities Management, Technology Resource Center and Missouri Research Corporation.

Graduate Assistantship Opportunities: A limited number of graduate teaching and research assistantships are available to provide qualified students financial assistance during their academic program. In addition to a stipend, the cost of tuition/incidental fees is waived for up to 24 semester hours per year for students receiving assistantships. Application for assistantships should be made through the School of Graduate Studies. Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is a student organization sponsored by the department offering numerous educational and networking opportunities for students. SME is the acronym for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is the world's leading professional society supporting lifelong manufacturing education and advancement. Through our member programs, publications, expositions and professional development resources, SME promotes an increased awareness of manufacturing engineering and helps keep manufacturing professionals up to date on leading trends and technologies.

Professional Certifications & Organizations: Students are eligible to take the following SME certifications:

Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT)
Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE)
Certified Enterprise Integrator (CEI)
Certified Engineering Manager (CEM)

Certification through SME's Manufacturing Engineering Certification Institute (MECI/SME) is a program of professional documentation and recognition of an individual's manufacturing-related knowledge, skills and capabilities. By becoming certified, you join an elite group of manufacturing professionals who have documented their manufacturing skills and knowledge.

Facilities: The programs are housed in the newOtto and Della Seabaugh Polytechnic Building. The building has nearly 70,000 square feet of floor space. Building highlights include: 12 laboratories with the latest high-tech equipment, five classrooms with multimedia instructional technology and internet access, an interactive television classroom, three fully networked computer labs, and a Technology Resource Center.

Research Opportunities: Research opportunities are available to students through individual faculty member research projects, Technology Resource Center, Missouri Research Corporation, and also from industries seeking to solve problems applicable to improving a process, service, procedure, or a product. The department has been successful in attracting funding opportunities and research projects from various organizations interested in using the expertise of our faculty and graduate students for solving a variety of application related research problems. Teaching Opportunities: The department is committed to providing teaching opportunities for its Graduate Assistants in the form of teaching and supervision of laboratory activities, and for teaching of lower-division courses. Laboratory teaching and supervision duties are also available for qualified graduate students interested in pursuing teaching opportunities.
