2009 St. Louis Interview Days Student Information

The Donald L. Harrison College of Business, Southeast Missouri State University, will be holding the annual St. Louis Interview Days on September 24-25, 2009. The general format will be similar to previous years. There will be a reception Thursday evening, Sept. 24 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Interviews will be scheduled Friday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The event will be held at the Holiday Inn-Southwest Viking Conference Center, 10709 Watson Road, St. Louis. Please mark Sept. 24 - 25, 2009, on your calendar for this important event. Registration information will be available at the beginning of the fall semester. However, don't wait until then to make your plans as your résumé must be approved for the résumé book before then.

Start putting your résumé together NOW so you will be ready. If you wait until the beginning of the fall semester, it will be too late. With over 100 students expected to attend, you want to make sure we have time to work with you in developing a good résumé. Each year some students are unable to attend as they waited too late to get started on their résumé and personnel were unable to squeeze them in at the last minute.

Company representatives select students for interviews based on résumés we send. This is not a career fair; actual interviews are scheduled with company representatives. They can only interview about 15 students in the available time slots, so you need to do everything you can to secure one of those coveted times. Selling yourself through your résumé is crucial to securing an interview. Make it a top priority--your future job prospectives could depend on it. A number of students receive job offers each year as a result of this event. Many alumni at the reception on Thursday evening will be fomer Southeast students who got their jobs as a result of participating in St. Louis Interview Days.

Interview Day provides an opportunity for St. Louis-area employers to interview Southeast business students for entry-level positions and/or internships. Many of these companies return every year as they have come to expect outstanding students eager to make their mark in the business world. Typically 400-500 interviews are conducted annually which result in a significant number of job placements.

The Thursday evening reception provides an opportunity for students and employers to meet informally and network. Each year several students are able to obtain additional interviews during this time. Note: Some companies use this as a pre-screening time, so make sure you attend if at all possible. You don't want to get bumped from your interview on Friday by a student they met at the reception that catches their eye. (Yes, that has happened.) Students preparing to graduate in the next year should make plans now to attend this important event.  Follow this link to get directions to the Viking Conference Center.

Résumés: Résumés are due early (during the summer), so start working on your résumé now and submit a draft as soon as possible. We have to have time to get the résumé book compiled and to the companies to select candidates for interviews. Additional info. Also see Résumé Guidelines. Amanda Barton, Career Linkages Advisor, is available to help you with your résumé. Please contact her as soon as possble as her time will be heavily booked the closer the deadline gets.

Interviewing Skills Seminar: An Interviewing Skills seminar will be held during Common Hour (September 16 in DH124) to prepare you for Interview Days. Career Linkages representatives will provide you with the latest tips and techniques to help you maximize your opportunities. This seminar is mandatory for students planning to participate St. Louis Interview Days. Students who have attended in the past were more confident, enthusiastic and at the recepion actively engaged in conversations with company representatives throughout the evening. Several companies bring teams with them so they could talk with all the interested students. Many, we are proud to say, were alumni of Southeast. Registered businesses with a link to their corporate Web sites are posted below. Please be adequately prepared for any scheduled interviews by researchin the companies and becoming familiar with their products and services provided. Registrations from companies are updated daily as they arrive.

Registration forms and deposit: Registration forms for students will be available at the beginning of the fall semester. For further information, contact Sharon Hale in Dempster Hall 239, smhale@semo.edu.
