Southeast MIS Students Finish Fifth in the Nation in AITP National Collegiate Conference

Two students from Southeast Missouri State University finished fifth in the nation at the eighth annual Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) National Collegiate Conference on March 28, 2003, at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Management Information Systems (MIS) students are in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) program in the Harrison College of Business at Southeast. Garett Dugan of Cape Girardeau and Matt Fischer of St. Louis, placed fifth in the nation among 56 other teams in the network design competition. Representatives from Wal-Mart, the network design competition sponsor, said this year’s network competition designs were some of the best they had ever seen.

“This is a significant achievement anytime, but particularly impressive given the short time we have had our MIS major,” said Dr. Gerald McDougall, dean of the Harrison College of Business. Universities in attendance at the conference included Brigham Young University, University of Florida, Kent State University, Oklahoma State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Texas A&M, University of North Dakota, Purdue University, University of Mississippi, Southwest Missouri State University, Illinois State University and Southern Illinois University.

Dugan and Fischer also recently sat for the Associate Computing Professional (ACP) core skills section of the two-part core examination and passed the core skills section. The ACP is offered by the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals, a non-for-profit professional society that has defined the computing industry’s common body of knowledge for the past 30 years.
