Jefferson City Native Succeeds after Uneasy Freshman Year

Southeast is the right place for Racheal Culberson.  An integrated marketing communications major and a Spanish minor, Racheal is an energetic person who is passionate about helping others.  She displays this same passion everyday through her work on campus.  The people at Southeast are so nice and willing to help people, according to Racheal, that her daily experience with faculty and staff changing students’ lives makes her want to do the same thing.

“I live to help people,” says Racheal.

Racheal had the opportunity to practice her marketing skills this past summer, when she worked as an intern for University Directories, a company based out of Chapel Hill, N.C. The company constructs and produces directories for campuses across the nation.  As part of a sales team, Racheal interacted with local business representatives as she helped them advertise in the Southeast Missouri State University directory.

“Any job where I can talk to people, be passionate about what I do and help them - I love that,” she explained.

It has been a long, fun ride according to Racheal, who graduates in May.  After an uneasy freshman year in which she dealt with the struggle of leaving a close-knit family, she found solace in the opportunities provided by Southeast.  She became involved in several campus groups, citing Minority Student Programs and Alpha Kappa Psi, the business fraternity, as the most beneficial.  Today she is involved in several programs including Alpha Kappa Psi, for which she is the rush chair, the Multicultural Recruitment Team for the Office of Admissions, the All University Judicial Board, Gear Up Mentoring and Alpha Mu Gamma, the national foreign language honor society.  In addition, she works 30 hours per week.

In her “spare” time, Racheal enjoys working out, reading about fitness and health, spending time with her friends and just unwinding.

After graduation, Racheal wants to gain real-world experience before she heads to graduate school.  Her ultimate plan is to become the vice president of sales for a corporation and then retire in the real estate business.

Through her collegiate life, Racheal says she has learned that the ability to talk to people and build relationships is the key to getting far in life.  Her advice to current and future students is to get involved and meet people.

“Take advantage of the opportunities Southeast has to offer,” says Racheal.  “Everyone at the school is willing to help you.”

Racheal is a great example of all that can be accomplished by those who utilize all the opportunities available at Southeast.
