Mr. Church teaches a variety of courses in the areas of coaching, coaching psychology, and sport. An area of concentration is the development and preparation of teachers and coaches.
He was a teacher and head coach in the public schools in Illinois for 10 years. In addition, he was an Associate Professor and Assistant Basketball Coach at Eastern Illinois University for 23 years.
He has served a an officer and on numerous committees for both the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and the Southeast District for IAHPERD. He is a former District and All Area "Coach of the Year" in Illinois high school basketball. He has coached in one NIT and two NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournaments.
Mr. Church is an avid runner, having competed in many road races and marathons. His wife, Dr. Phoebe Church, is a former chairperson for the department of Kinesiology and Sport Studies at Eastern Illinois University. His daughter, Leslie, is a SEMO graduate in 1999 as a Speech and Language Pathologist. His oldest on, Drew, played basketball at the University of Evansville and is the current head basketball coach at Cape Central High School. His youngest son, Dane, is a student and basketball player at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
