The mission of the Interior Design Program at Southeast Missouri State University is to prepare graduates who will create healthy and safe environments that enhance the quality of life. The program strives to develop interior design professionals who critically apply core design and technical knowledge that reflects global and sustainable perspectives within the built environment.

Goals
  • Create and maintain a cutting edge academic program that incorporates research and best practices with a strong emphasis on the technical and creative design processes
    • Objective 1:  Maintain NKBA accreditation
    • Objective 2:  Continue to evaluate and revise curriculum as the profession evolves
    • Objective 3:  Develop curricular content that promotes research with a global and cultural awareness
    • Objective 4: Recruit and retain qualified full-time and part-time faculty
    • Objective 5: Recruit and retain qualified traditional and non-traditional students
  • Utilize business contacts to expose students to networking opportunities and the most technologically advanced products and materials
    • Objective 1: Engage design professionals to share their expertise in a variety of formats
    • Objective 2: Provide as many opportunities for experiential learning as possible (on-campus and off-campus)
  • To create an inherent understanding and appreciation for sustainable design theory and practice
    • Objective 1: Encourage students to become LEED Accredited Professionals
    • Objective 2: Critically evaluate changes in sustainable design practices and innovative material development
  • Prepare students to navigate the challenges and demands of an ever-changing and expanding profession
    • Objective 1: Encourage participation in local community and university design projects, national design competitions, attendance at national conferences, and international travel
    • Objective2:  Prepare and encourage students to become certified professionals (NCIDQ, LEED, AKBD)
    • Objective 3: Require the completion of a 160 hour internship
    • Objective 4: Promote active membership in professional organizations
