Staying fit and active are two words Southeast alumna Amanda Starman uses in her daily vocabulary. After graduating in May 2004 with a major in recreation and a minor in health promotion, Amanda moved to St. Louis to be the fitness specialist for the Lodge Des Peres.
Amanda spends each day helping people get into shape and live a healthier lifestyle. She is responsible for hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating fitness associates at the Lodge. Amanda also implements programs targeted towards youth and teambuilding activities for large corporations.
“My favorite aspect of my job is working with such an amazing staff and being able to interact with people on a daily basis,” Amanda said.
Amanda is originally from Riverton, Ill., and chose Southeast because of the small class sizes it offers and its location in Cape Girardeau. Amanda says Southeast contributed to her current success because of her professors’ professional leadership in class and the guidance she received from her advisor when deciding upon a major.
Southeast provided Amanda a social side to her education, and she says she loved to attend the football games and support Southeast’s athletic teams. Amanda also met her fiancé at Southeast and is currently in the process of planning their wedding.
Amanda says it is important for a fitness specialist to practice what they preach. She demonstrates this motto to her clients by staying active through running, biking and lifting weights. She also enjoys visiting her family in Riverton and is looking forward to her honeymoon in Jamaica.
Amanda says she is a firm believer in living life to the fullest. Her best advice for future Southeast students is to set a goal and stay the course until it is reached.
“Students should remember that giving up doesn’t always mean you are weak,” Amanda
said. “Sometimes it only means you are strong enough to let go.”
