Requirements for Admission

To be admitted to the Graduate Program in History, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree with 24 semester hours of undergraduate credit in the field, and a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in history and/or related disciplines. In addition to the admission requirements of Graduate School, the Department of History requires:

  • A letter of intent indicating how the applicant’s past experiences have prepared him or her for a graduate degree. The letter should also address what the applicant expects to achieve through graduate study.
  • Two letters of recommendation that attest to the applicant's academic and/or professional achievement and ability to succeed in the graduate program.
  • An academic or professional writing sample.

An applicant lacking any of the above requirements may, under certain circumstances, be admitted provisionally.

Apply for a Graduate Assistantship in the Department of History

The Department of History has two Graduate Assistantships that offer students the chance to develop their professional skills while receiving some financial support via a stipend ($7,600) and a fee waiver.  Preference is given to applicants with teaching experience and/or historic preservation experience.  Deadlines are May 15 and October 15 yearly, but since Graduate Assitantships are generally held by awardees until they graduate, the two assistantships are not always available yearly.  However, the Department occasionally receives short-term Graduate Assistantships, so it is always worth putting in an application.

For information on other Graduate Assistantships available elsewhere in the university, visit the School fo Graduate Studies page on those positions
