Business Learning Community

The Business Learning Community is for students majoring in areas of study within the Harrison College of Business and is located in the Merick residence hall.  It is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in various experiential learning and community activities with faculty, staff, and business representatives of interest to business students.

The Business Learning Community is limited to 46 students, of which a majority will be first year or new pre-business students. Any student who desires to participate in the Business Learning Community must indicate their preference for this community though the Contract for University Housing assignment process.

The Business Learning Community is a great way for students to meet other business students who share similar interests in the business disciplines. Students will live in the same community in Merick hall and will be afforded the opportunities to participate in business and community related activities together. The Business Learning Community will focus on helping students as they work to become successful business students and citizens through an approach which fosters practical experiences, service learning, academic achievement and leadership initiatives.

Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):

  • Internship search programs
  • MBA or Not MBA?
  • Panels of local business leaders
  • Job shadowing programs
  • Community service projects
  • Résumé Challenge/Build your resume
  • Effective Interviewing/Mock Interviews
  • Dress for success
  • Participation in “Stock Market Game”
  • Invites to student clubs sponsored by College of Business

To sign up for this community, returning students should participate in the Priority Sign-Up process.  New students should indicate their preference for this community on their Contract for University Housing and then fill out and return the application that they receive in the mail.

There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community.  This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).

The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with the Harrison College of Business to offer the Business Learning Community as a housing option.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
