Construction Management and Interior Design (CMID)

Office of Residence Life and the Departments of Construction Management and Housing and Interior Design have partnered together for an inter-disciplinary learning community located in the New Residence Hall. The CMID Learning Community is a dynamic community focused on building and enhancing skills for careers in the fields of Interior Design and Construction Management. In addition to integrating first year students and upper-class students, this Learning Community will enhance relationships between faculty and students in the two departments.

Students participating in the Interior Design and Construction Management Learning Community will gain valuable experiences through interactions with faculty and programs within the residence hall community. Students will have the opportunity to connect to local professionals through panel discussions, learn on-site training through Habitat for Humanity service projects, and build relationships with faculty through programs and events.

Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):

  • Workshops and Lectures
    • Invite faculty from Interior Design program to present on building a portfolio
    • Panel discussions or company tours of local professionals
  • Service Projects
    • Habitat for Humanity builds
    • Boys and Girls Club renovation/redecoration
  • Networking Series
    • Connect with student organizations (American Society of Interior Design – Southeast chapter, Southeast Students in Action, etc.)
    • Company tours and field trips
  • Social Events
    • Faculty dinners
    • Gingerbread house contest
    • The Accessibility Challenge
    • Room Swap
    • My Big Residence Hall Renovation
      • Interior Design program to “renovate” residence hall spaces, such as Vandiver Study Lounges, Dearmont Hall Council Office, etc.
  • Study Groups

To sign up for this community, returning students should participate in the Priority Sign-Up process.  New students should indicate their preference for this community on their Contract for University Housing and then fill out and return the application that they receive in the mail.

There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community.  This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).

The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with the faculty of the Construction Management and Interior Design departments to offer the Business Learning Community as a housing option.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
