Education Learning Community

The Education Learning Community prepares elementary and secondary education majors for upper-level coursework in the College of Education as well as for a career in teaching. Students will gain a preliminary understanding of their future profession through interactions with education faculty and upper-class education students. This program integrates first-year students and upper-class students within the education majors to create an environment which ties students to the College of Education and their peers.

Currently located in Vandiver Hall, the Education Learning Community is limited to 66 students and is open to both new and returning students. Any student who desires to participate in the Education Learning Community must indicate their preference for this community though the Contract for University Housing assignment process.

Students participating in this community benefit from informal opportunities to interact with faculty through programs and events in the residence hall.  Faculty may also hold special study sessions for the C-BASE (open to ALL education majors) in the hall and other topics for success in the education curriculum at Southeast. Through these interactions students will become better prepared to meet the expectations of the College of Education.

Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):

  • Academic Initiatives
    • Faculty review sessions
    • C-BASE/PRAXIS test preparation programs
  • Social
    • Faculty dinners or receptions
    • Floor dinners
  • Community Service
    • Floor participation in campus and community service projects
    • Tutoring at local schools
  • Workshops and Lectures
    • Hot Topics and Debates in Education
    • Teacher Work Product (TWP) Seminars

There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community.  This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).

The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with the College of Education to offer the Education Learning Community as a housing option.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
