Honors Learning Community

In keeping with our commitment to experimental learning, the Office of Residence Life and Jane Stephens Honors Program are partners in providing a residential experience focused on students in the Stephens Honors Program.

The Honors Learning Community promotes student and faculty involvement in the Stephens Honors Program in and out of the classroom. Students living in the Honors Learning Community will live among other dedicated students with diverse academic ambitions and interests. This learning community encourages students to become engaged in their academic experiences and encourages personal growth.

Students living in this learning community will participate in programs that support the goals of the Stephens Honors Program. Programs include field trips, community service projects, educational and social events.

Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):

  • Workshops and Lectures
    • Brown Bag series – faculty would be invited to discuss research topics, current events, etc.
    • Bi-weekly film series – co-host with the Honors Council.
  • Service Projects
    • Service projects in the Cape Girardeau Community – Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, Safe House, etc.
    • Charlie Brown Thanksgiving – an educational and social program for residents to watch a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, eat a dinner, and raise awareness of local food pantries and soup kitchens.
  • Academic Initiatives
    • Field trips to local and regional cultural events
    • Study groups
  • Social Events
    • Faculty dinners/dessert receptions
    • LEAD Honors! A partnership program with the Center for Student Involvement to promote leadership development and civic responsibility.

To sign up for this community, returning Honors students should participate in the Priority Sign-Up process. New Honors students should indicate their preference for this community on their Contract for University Housing and then fill out and return the application that they receive in the mail.

There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community. This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).

The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with the Stephens Honors Program to offer the Honors Learning Community as a housing option.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
