Global and International Issues

The Office of Residence Life and university partners are proud to support the International and Global Issues Learning Community re-opening in Myers Hall. The International and Global Issues Learning Community is an inter-disciplinary program for international and American students seeking to broaden their experience in an increasingly global world.  Any major is welcome to be part of the community and students only need an interest in learning more about a global society and international cultures. This program will strongly encourage study abroad experiences with options for those preparing for or returning from study abroad experiences to live in the community.

Students participating in this learning community will live within a diverse group and have hands on experience learning about global issues. The goal of this community is to increase students’ knowledge of international and global issues and to create an understanding of and respect for cultural differences. Students will work closely with staff from International Programs as well as with faculty from a variety of disciplines to participate in a culturally engaging environment.

At the beginning of each semester, the community will attend an International/Global Issues retreat to build bonds and ties between the community participants. This purpose of this retreat is to gain an understanding of the cultural differences within the community and to create open lines of communication. With the aid of live-in Residence Life staff, students will plan and implement discussions, lectures, debates, and cultural social experiences in the hall.

Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):

  • Community Retreat
  • International Community Council
  • Culture Nights
  • International Speakers
  • International Daily News
  • Holiday Celebrations
  • International Film Festival
  • Debates and Discussion Topics pertinent to an International and Global environment

To sign up for this community, returning students should participate in the Priority Sign-Up process.  New students should indicate their preference for this community on their Contract for University Housing and then fill out and return the application that they receive in the mail.
There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community.  This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).

The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with various University partners to offer the Global and International Issues Learning Community as a housing option.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
