Cancer Support Program Expands

The UnitedHealthcare Sherpa program was introduced as a limited pilot in 2011 to test a new model for non-clinical cancer support. Last year it was expanded to over 3.6 million eligible members and has proven to be a valuable consumer service. On March 1, 2014 Sherpa will automatically become available to 5.6 million additional UnitedHealthcare members that are covered under employer plans with 100 or more.

Sherpa does not require any action on the part of brokers, employers or UnitedHealthcare representatives, but the program has been well received by members, and employers may be interested in learning more.

Sherpa is a concierge customer service model that provides non-clinical assistance to UnitedHealthcare members who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The Sherpa Program can help members with:

  • Cancer treatment terminology and assistance in resolving claims questions.
  • Advice on how to make effective use of their health insurance benefits.
  • Assistance with physician interaction and making appointments.
  • Setting up a conference call with clinical and claims experts if needed.

When a UnitedHealthcare member is identified as a possible cancer patient, Sherpa support is automatically engaged; there is no enrollment process. The service center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
