The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides a leave of absence for employees who must be away from work for specific reasons.

Supervisors should contact Human Resources at (573) 651-2206 whenever an employee is absent from work for at least three consecutive calendar days so that FMLA hours can be recorded.

FMLA allows up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the following absences:

  • For incapacity due to pregnancy, prenatal medical care or child birth;
  • To care for the employee’s child after birth or placement for adoption or foster care;
  • To care for the employee’s spouse, son or daughter, or parent who has a serious health condition; or
  • For a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the employee’s job.

Employee rights and responsibilities under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) are outlined in the Department of Labor’s publication at http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/posters/fmlaen.pdf.

Notice for Family Members of Military personnel: Section 585(a) of the National Defense Authorization Act amended the FMLA to provide eligible employees working for covered employers two important new leave rights related to military service.

Supervisors and employees may obtain additional information by contacting Human Resources at (573) 651-2206.
