Archival Assistant - Special Collections and Archives, Kent Library

Full Time  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manages the public service functions of Special Collections and Archives department in Kent Library
  • Supervises graduate and undergraduate students, student interns, and volunteers
  • Provides physical and virtual reference services to patrons of Special Collections
  • Provides arrangement and description of archival collections
  • Creates guides and other reference tools to facilitate access to materials in Special Collections and Archives
  • Participates in the planning, development, creation, and management of digital initiatives
  • Works with Kent Library IT and web committee to develop and maintain the Special Collections and Archives website and other digital outreach tools
  • Contributes to the planning, development, and execution of physical and virtual outreach activities (i.e. exhibits, blogs)
  • Works with donors and potential donors to Special Collections
  • Participates in instruction on the use of Special Collections and Archives to the campus
  • Promotes the mission and interests of Special Collections to the community, the region and within the archives profession
  • Serves on library and university committees

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Historic Preservation or related field; Master’s degree in Library Science, Archives or related field a plus
  • Familiarity with archival standards and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide reference services to an archival repository
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out projects
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with word processing and digital imaging technology
  • Experience in the arrangement and description of historical records
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds with or without accommodations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with multi-cultural populations and awareness of issues affecting women and minorities
