TN stands for (Trade NAFTA) category. The North American Free Trade Agreement facilitates the entry of Canadian and Mexican citizens to the United States to engage in professional business activities on a temporary basis. The TN allows for admission of individuals for the purpose of:
Canadians Citizens
- Working for a U.S. employer as a professional; or
- Working for a foreign employer (including even a non-Canadian employer) to provide pre-arranged professional services to a U.S. employer.
Mexican Citizens
- Working for a U.S. employer as a professional
- Unlike Canadian citizens, Mexican citizens cannot use the TN category to provide pre-arranged services in the U.S. for a foreign employer; they must be employed directly by a U.S. employer.
Canadians and Mexicans can be admitted for periods up to one year. Extensions of stay are also granted in one-year increments. There is no cumulative total limit. Status can be renewed each year indefinitely.
Canadians do not need to obtain a visa stamp from a U.S. Embassy or consulate in Canada. They may apply for TN status at the point of entry into the U.S. No prior pre-approved application is needed.
