CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 17, 2008 -- The Missouri Research Corporation (MRC) has been named a national finalist for the second consecutive year for community development as recognized by the University Economic Development Association (UEDA). 

The MRC competed on the topic of "The Fourth Mission:  Expanding the Role of Universities in Community Economic Development."  Dennis Roedemeier, chief executive officer of the MRC, delivered the presentation.  Last year, the MRC was recognized for Operation Jump-StartTM, its nationally-recognized, award-winning entrepreneurial training model. 

Also this year, the MRC was featured in a panel presentation in the "Emerging Techniques" category. Panelists were Christy LeGrand, projects coordinator of MRC; Bill Vickery, director of entrepreneurship of the Southeast Innovation Center; and Dennis Roedemeier, chief executive officer of the MRC.  They shared information with summit attendees on Community Jump-Start, Operation Jump-Start and the economic development mission of Southeast Missouri State University.  Community Jump-Start is a program funded by USDA Rural Development that allows the MRC to work with southeast Missouri communities to stir, or jump-start, economic development and community improvement activities.

The annual summit was held this month in St. Petersburg, Fla.  The UEDA is a vibrant and growing organization of higher education institutions and their economic development affiliates from across the nation. The organization focuses on effective economic development strategies, best practices, metrics and emerging opportunities. UEDA is the only national organization that represents the entire spectrum of higher education-based economic development.
