Autism and autism research are common household words today. In February 2003, The Tailor Instutite (TTI) was founded to specialize in promoting research activities and developing services for high-functioning or gifted autistic children. The institute's mission is to identify specific skills and talents of gifted individuals with high-functioning autism and to translate those skills into long-term career opportunitites, in order to empower them to achieve independence and eliminate the need for government support. Dr. David Crowe is the President/CEO, and the institute is affiliated with the Autism Research Institute in San Diego. Elaine Beussink is the director of TTI and asid that the plans for early 2010 will be to move into the new Autism Center building currently under construction on Washington Street in Cape Girardeau. TTI will be housed with the University Autism Center as well as Judevine Center.
