Andrea Branum: Journal Entry 10/5/2004

Hi all! I really like my UI100 teacher. Last Wednesday, we had a pizza and movie night, our teacher bought us Papa John’s and we watched Pirates of the Caribbean.  The funny part is, only like 8 people came! Who could pass up free pizza?! But anyways, we realized how long that movie really was when we started getting bored and ignored the movie.  We kept talking and goofing off.  Ryan had to go to work (at the rock wall) at 7. I said something about really wanting to climb it and somehow, me and another guy in the class, Kyle, decided to go climb the wall.  Well, it wasn’t until after we started walking over to the Rec Center that I realized I had sandals on.  So me and Kyle get in there and get harnessed up and I make him climb first.  I wanted to see how hard it was so I would know how I would do.  He went up the wall in like 5 seconds.  Then, it was my turn.  I didn’t do to bad at all. The guy belaying me was really cool with helping me know where to move if I got stuck, which only happened a couple of times.  The most rewarding thing for me though was not actually making it to the top and ringing the little bell, but with every movement up I made, I felt like I was accomplishing something. I’m not going to lie; I was pretty stressed last week about homework and still am this week but when I was climbing, all of my stress disappeared.  I’d grab a hold with my hand and push off another with my foot and before I knew it, I felt confident about my group paper for UI100 and IM102. And when I got to the top, it was like I was at the top of my gigantic homework stack, but it was all finished.  I know it sounds really weird, but climbing the rock wall was a stress reliever.  Ryan talked me into climbing the part that angles out from that wall.  It was so funny because I’m only 5’2” so I couldn’t even reach the first foothold! I was laughing so hard! Then I sudden am like a foot off the ground and Ryan’s pushing me to the wall! He pulled the rope so I could reach the holds! So I start climbing and I glace down and I’m like, “Man, I’m a ways up”.  Then I get stuck due to my shortness and can’t reach anything and fall.  I’m hanging there trying to swing myself back to the wall when Ryan comes to me and pushes me back.  I crack up laughing because I was only like 4 feet off the ground, I thought I was higher up.  But wow, does that ever wear out your arm muscles! It’s a great way to get in shape! I felt so good after we had finished climbing.  I would defiantly recommend that everyone go climb the rock wall at least once to just have a good time.  The people working it are great! Especially Ryan, he’ll always give you a good laugh!  And if I can climb it in sandals, anyone can climb it in tennis shoes! This is getting really long so until next week, God Bless!
